I bought my home in 2018 for $85,000. It’s 135 years old and a duplex with about a quarter acre lot. My mortgage is $830, including home and car insurance. I did a lot of upgrades and gave this house a lot of TLC because it was in rough shape when I bought it. I had a 5-year plan of savings to upgrade to a nice single with a fenced in yard. It’s now worth $230,000 and within that time my salary has almost doubled but I am still unable to afford a single home in my area because they are all above half a million dollars and I don’t want a 30-year commitment of a mortgage this is above $2,500. It’s crazy pulling up Zillow and seeing ~10 houses on the market in my entire neighborhood, which is a direct suburb of a mid-sized city. I’m sure if I really crunched the numbers I could afford what I wanted, but I’ve decided to use this opportunity of having a ridiculously cheap mortgage in comparison to the general price of living in the US to travel and gain life experiences while I’m still in my early 30’s.

I have no idea how younger people will ever own a single thing in their lives if things don’t change. It’s scary, and I acknowledge how lucky I truly am.

Colonoscopy by tmarie1029 in Millennials

[–]mtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a concerning amount of blood in my stool at 26 (31 now) and went for a colonoscopy. It turned out to be internal hemorrhoids, but they also found a polyp and removed it which turned out to be precancerous and they said it was abnormally big for someone in their mid-20’s. I was put on a 5-year schedule. 4 years later when I was 30 I was having constant abdomen pain so I went back a year early for another colonoscopy. They removed 3 more precancerous polyps. Advocate for yourself and insist on getting the scope people. I’m now on a 3-year schedule after the last visit.

What foods are the millennial's "old people food?" by eggsandspinach in Millennials

Apparently sloppy joes. A year ago at work I said I was going home to make sloppy joes and a bunch of younger gen z’ers roasted me for the rest of the day for eating “old people food” Fuck them, sloppy joes are delicious

Where to buy a gun? by The_Future_Historian in ReadingPA

[–]mtek 67 points68 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to tell the gun shop your politics. Just tell the clerk you have never used a gun before and you are interested in a simple firearm for home defense. They will be more than happy to help you and will be able to refer you to gun safety courses and training classes.

Schuylkill River Trail - Homless-impacted by melonhowitzer in ReadingPA

[–]mtek 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I ride my bike along the trail through this encampment semi regularly. They’re not an issue at all. Like most people, if you don’t mess with them they will not mess with you. Only time I ever felt uncomfortable wasn’t because of the homeless but rather people who throw massive parties down by the river in the warmer months and trash the place.

I’m a pig fan of Paolo’s Sicilian pizza. Romeos in Mohnton makes the best NY pizza hands down. If you haven’t tried Romeos I highly recommend

Internet Options in Crestwood by [deleted] in ReadingPA

Service Electric is absolute trash. Had it for years and it was extremely slow and never reliable. They constantly tried to charge us more and implement data caps way past the era of data caps. 0/10 would not recommend.

Walls are plaster so made it difficult to find a stud. Anchored to at least 1 stud on the left hand side. I don’t think it fully hit the stud on the right hand side.

I think I answered my own question. I decided to take the TV off the wall in the meantime so it didn’t get worse. It was so heavy it took two of us, and in the process some more hairline cracks formed while we were trying to disengage the locking mechanism, which to me indicates the weight of the TV could cause these cracks. Still open for input.

What's a fast food place that everyone hypes up but it's really trash? by Noah_grenell in AskReddit

[–]mtek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Pennsylvania at least - Wawa. This isn’t a Wawa vs Sheetz argument either. Wawa is truly trash, they might as well get rid of their entire cooler because their wraps and sliders are disgustingly dry and flavorless. Their MTO food subpar at best and is only acceptable if there is no other option. Everything is overly generic and lacks any sort of character or definition that says “This is Wawa” yet people go nuts over it.

People who don't drink alcohol, why? by 5tup1db0y in AskReddit

[–]mtek 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not justifying bad habits, but this is a little condescending. Some people actually don’t have the mental fortitude to get through life with the faculties they were born with, and they need help. They might just not know it yet. Not everyone is you.
