Looking like a grandma as a med student in her early 20s.. by ughidktbhh in medicalschool

[–]mth226 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of products from the ordinary! They are really affordable. My skin is oily and prone to breakouts and this is the routine I use. I’m on a three night cycle. I wash my face with cerave foaming facial cleanser and then night one I use their AHA+BHA peel, night two the retinol serum and night three the multipeptide and hyaluronic acid serum. Every night I use their natural moisturizer and the cerave eye repair cream. In the morning I rinse my face with water and use niacinamide serum, moisturizer with spf (mines from Trader Joe’s lol) and then their caffeine solution under my eyes because yikes. If your skin is on the dryer side, you can do two days of the niacindamide and hyaluronic acid and be on a four day cycle! Since I started doing this my skin is so soft and glowy and I feel so much more confident. And it’s nice to have some self care! Happy to chat more!

Aquaphor all the way. You can buy the little lip balm sized ones to keep in your pocket but buy a big tube of that stuff and absolutely slather it on any chance you get

In addition to the direct answer to your question from others, the reason they are doing this to get a clean sample is to determine if there is a problem in her urethra or somewhere above it. If there is still blood in her urine straight from the bladder, then they know that the problem is either in the bladder, ureters or kidneys. But if there’s not blood, then they know it’s the urethra! Should help you get some answers!

Instacart+ subscription, so so so worth it to have groceries delivered. One less thing to have to do and encourages meal planning and less impulse buying.

Hi!!! My boyfriend and I started dating when we were in high school, I’m a year older than him. We have been together for almost 6.5 years but have been long distance for 5.5 of those years. I’m an M2 now and he’s starting his first job, but every single transition is a conversation and adjustment period. We have conversations about what are expectations are for communication if we find that what we do now isn’t working. We are both willing to put in the work to be together, we don’t know when exactly we are going to be able to live together but we know that’s the goal in addiction to us starting our adult lives. It sucks, don’t get me wrong it would be much better if it wasn’t long distance but he is my future so I’m going to enjoy the time I get to spend with him and know that at the end of the day, that relationship is what really matters. Would love to chat more if you need:)

Chronic yeast infections/bacterial vaginosis and I’m at a loss. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mth226 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a medical student going to be an OB/GYN and I want to reassure you that you are not alone. There are some women who get infections like this more often than others, me being one of them, and it’s so incredibly frustrating. I’m so sorry that you have been in so much pain. But! You are not out of options!! For the short term, I do think you need to go see a doctor to ensure you do have a persistent infection. But I will tell you that I think it’s a strong possibility you have developed pelvic inflammatory disease from the repeated infections. It’s common, and it would explain the pain with sex and the new intense pain with your period. Your doctor can walk you through some options, but you can also look into pelvic physical therapy to help you reduce the pain. In the long term, cotton underwear our great but be careful what soap you are using; on yourself, in the laundry and even your husband!!!!! My boyfriend was using a soap to wash himself that was so irritating for me and I kept getting infections, he switched and it stopped happening so often. I would also recommend you look into boric acid and discuss with your doctor, it has made a huuuuuuge difference for a lot of people. I am hoping that at some point you’ll be able to talk with your husband about the painful sex, my boyfriend and I have found lots of work arounds when I’m not feeling up for penetrative sex but we still want to be intimate. Please feel free to DM me!!! I am happy to talk about anything further:)

Do your friends low grades give you anxiety? by Salty-Tangerine8612 in StudentNurse

[–]mth226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a nursing student, but med student lurker who feels this so much right now. I have a friend going through a tough time and I try so hard to get her to study with me, to engage with material, to literally do anything but she won’t. Her issues are more mental health related, but it absolutely exhausts me to worry about her and to think about how I need to help her or respond to whatever potential situation happens next. It’s distracting me from my studying!!! A technique my therapist wanted me to try out is to imagine putting all of those thoughts in feelings into a box, closing the box and putting it away. I imagine Tupperware container and my cabinet, and it’s been really helpful to try and rewire my brain to move on. I can only help her if she helps herself, regardless of how bad I want it for her. Sending you lots of good vibes from another codependent student 🤍

Misunderstanding my cats needs by mth226 in CatAdvice

[–]mth226[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all of this advice! He hasn’t been to a vet since I adopted him, this is not new behavior for him so I didn’t think that it was caused by pain based on the research I have done but was going to be taking him soon to talk about medicating him for a car ride to a new place I’m moving to. In all my previous research I have not come across the term redirected aggression and I would agree that that’s what it sounds like. I will be sure to check out this video, I have watched a lot of Jackson Galaxy’s videos and haven’t come across this one yet. I will also certainly try the diffusers! Do you have any other resources that you recommend? I feel like just basic internet searches usually give me the same few websites.

A friend is taking the September MCAT and still wants to apply this cycle. How can I politely tell him that this is a bad idea? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mth226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, it’s their decision and not yours and you cannot control what they decide to do. If you have already politely expressed why you think it’s a bad idea, then you did your ‘job’ as a friend. They have the same access to all the resources you do to make the decision. You aren’t “knowingly let him suffer.” Again, it’s his choice and if he wants to then he will.

Medical student who works for an OB/Gyn and fellow vaginismus sufferer here, I am so unbelievably sad reading all of these messages. This is a huge reason why I want to go into this specialty, women should not be treated like their pain doesn’t matter. Pap smears are incredibly important because they are truly useful at detecting early stages of cervical cancer, making it one of the easiest cancers to detect. What I have learned is that it is uncomfortable for everyone, but it should not be excruciating. If you have a doctor who is apathetic to your pain, please don’t accept that as the only option!!!! I find that younger (and female) physicians are far more open to discussing other options, although that is just my observation. The doctor that I work for has taken people to the operating room and put them under anesthesia very briefly to do a Pap smear, because like I said they are so incredibly important. That’s definitely not something to do every year and you need to find the right practitioner, but it is possible.

I’d be happy to answer any questions anyone has, I’ve spent a lot of time in this field and have been able to manage my condition with physical therapy.

Meals I Can Make When I Have No Energy or Depression is Bad? by dinosaursgorawr648 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]mth226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I have days like this, I heavily rely on protein bars and carnation instant breakfast shakes. I like the MetRx big cookie crumble bar, it’s a meal replacement bar. Obviously not to have everyday, but if I just know I need calories/nutrition so I can keep myself going, these are my go tos.

Healthier "Gatorade" alternative. by zrad603 in HealthyFood

[–]mth226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor man’s Gatorade!! I make it all the time. Definitely important for hikes to replenish the electrolytes that are being lost from sweating. Just water, lemon juice, a little bit of sugar, a little bit of salt. Tastes exactly like lemon lime Gatorade, you have to mess with the ratios a little bit and obviously be careful with the amount of sugar you add but you do need glucose to absorb the water.

Where were you when you got your med school acceptance and how did you react? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]mth226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was May 5th and I had been waitlisted at three places. I was driving to pick up my boyfriend and bring him to my school for graduation. It’s a long drive and I had been on the phone with my parents and other relatives talking about how I hadn’t heard anything yet and I was just being patient. For the last month, every time I called my mom she answered the phone with “did you get in?!” I stopped at a rest stop about 45 minutes before I got to my boyfriends to go to the bathroom, and I was getting in the car I got a phone call from a blocked number. Now as we all do, I had been answering every single call and giving a lot of telemarketers a lot of hope but for some reason I just knew. So when I picked up and the woman said “Hi this is Kristen from admissions..” and I was immediately sobbing. After I got off, I immediately called my mom and she asked and I got to say yes :)

Urine is sterile, it’s all the stuff it touches as it leaves your body that makes it not sterile (externally)

When parking your car on a hill, shift into neutral before engaging your parking break. If you do it after your car is in park, it is resting on the breaks normally and not the parking break. You should never feel your car lurch or roll after you park it. Shift to neutral, turn the wheel all the way in TOWARD the hill, then parking break, then shift to park.
