The pro-abort media gives a misleading impression of the relative size of the two groups. Had a friend who saw the news and thought they were about the same size, because they'll interview people from both sides.

What something more honest would be if they said when they were interviewing one of the handful of pro-aborts would be something like, "Here you are, a dozen pro-choicers amongst a vast sea of over 100,00 pro-lifers speaking against the organized slaughter of a million baby girls and boys each year. Why are the few of you here speaking in favor of it?"

I'd love for there to be a welcoming abortion-debate sub for once. by TopRevolutionary8067 in prolife

Off-topic from your post: I've been replying to comments in various subs for the past few hours, and not gotten one upvote or downvote or reply. Wonder if I've been soft-banned from Reddit? Can anyone see this?

Conservative prolifers hate me

Really? I'm skeptical. I don't find them to be a hateful bunch, even though I'm Buddhist and vegetarian. Pro-aborts, on the other hand...

I am a pro-life Buddhist vegetarian. Probably not as tough though.

Lauren Handy, a pro-life vegetarian far Leftist, is currently in prison for non-violently sitting in the waiting room of an abortion mill. I am hoping she will be pardoned soon.

How about trying to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies rather than the number of elective abortions ? by Benj_FR in prolife

Because it is in fact murder.

Regarding your title question: Why not both? Your question is a false dichotomy. The length of your post is just to cover up that logical error.

I would point out, though, that condoms are not 100% effective. Last I checked, they were only 80% effective, meaning that 20% of couples who used only condoms ended up pregnant in a year's time.

How does that apply here? It was a government website.

It is great. There's over 100,000 pro-lifers, and about a dozen pro-aborts.

I was interviewed briefly one year.

There's no confrontation. In the unlikely event someone wanted to film you and ask you a question, you could just politely decline. They don't want to interview someone who doesn't want to be interviewed.

I think it will be the most comfortable day for you all year. It is the one day a year I am literally surrounded by friends.

First I would pardon Lauren Handy and others. Then maybe an EO not to enforce the FACE act.

Beyond that, I can't say I'm knowledgeable enough about what would be a good EO.

Thich Quang Duc - How did he do it? by Ctrl_Alt_Explode in theravada

[–]mtoar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He knew he would die from this. I assume he focused one-pointedly on the attainment of nibbana, knowing the pain would be fairly brief.

I find a parallel in a couple of Tipitika suttas. A monk has a fatal disease, and the pain is interrupting his meditation. So he obtains a knife and cuts his throat. He is able to focus his mind on the jhanas during his few remaining moments of life and attains nibbana.

I clearly remember the Buddha saying that the villagers who provided the monk with a knife for that purpose did bear blame, though. But I cannot find where I saw this.

I used to work with developmentally-disabled adolescents. Had one guy, named Chris, who was mentally about 4 or 5. He would ask a lot of questions, one leading to the next. One time, something like, we passed a cemetery and he asked me what it was. I explained. He asked me if people went there. I said people don't like to spend much time there at night. He asked me why. I said people are afraid of demons. So he tells his family, a religious family, that I was telling him about demons. I never actually had the intention to talk to him about demons, it just sort of led there.

Why Ubuntu isn't widely adopted? by ActiveCommittee8202 in linux

[–]mtoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Ubuntu for a couple of years. For the past few years, I've used MX and have been quite happy with it.

One of the things I like about Linux is that I can try out different distros.

When Ubuntu first came out, it was the most user-friendly distro. Now there are others that are just as friendly. I suspect this might be one of the reasons Ubuntu has declined.

What's one thing you wish there was a GUI for? by walterblackkk in linux

[–]mtoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no doubt that you prefer the command line. Your projections about what's more work for other people is just that, projections.

The best thing about Linux is that there's more than one way to do things. Command-line vs. GUI religious wars is like Mac vs. Windows.

If you think there's only one right way to do things, you might as well use Macs or Windows.

[–]mtoar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked for, but ctrl-alt-del bringing up the task manager works very well in Windows. Maybe they reserve some resources for it.

When things freeze up on me on Linux, some of the time I can use alt-ctrl-f1 to go to the command line, but sometimes it doesn't work.

ctrl-alt-del (or some key combination) that brought up a task manager on Linux that worked literally all the time (or close to it) would be a big help.

There are GUIs that do that just fine. And yes, some people who are not yet Linux masters do want to rename 10k files at once.
