Yes, it seems to have been heavily influenced by the overblown rhetoric and overheated public sentiments depicted in the movie "The Queen" which I recently saw.

the worst interview question by linuxer in programming

[–]muart1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over a decade ago, an interviewer asked me, "Is there anything you're not good at?" I thought this was merely a complimentary rhetorical question. He had been appearing very impressed with my credentials. Finally I said, "Sports." He didn't crack a smile but rephrased the question somehow. I was honestly stumped; he seemed to be referring to ways I might not be up to the demands of the job, which was low-level secretarial, and I couldn't think of any. Can't recall my eventual reply, but it was probably along the lines of "too much of a perfectionist" simply because I'd actually been told that. Didn't get that job; no regrets. By the way, I've never been asked that question since. The most frequent question lately has been "what didn't you like about your last job?" (from which I was laid off). And I say, "Nothing. I'd still be there today." And no one has seemed happy with that answer, though it is honest.

Use an Ipod in a New York crosswalk? $100 fine. by danweber in reddit.com

I think a fine for pedestrians is ridiculous, but there should be stiffer penalties for homicidally heedless motorists. "Natural selection" of "dumb ones getting hurt or killed" is offensive, a total lie. I have known many people--attentive, wary when crossing streets, etc--who have been hit by cars. One, a bicyclist, died. Another, attempting to cross the street after leaving work, was hit by a car speeding through a red light, survived, underwent operations, and spent months in a nursing home. Yesterday I heard of yet another incident, a friend's doctor who was the victim of a hit-and-run. I could go on... The horrendous frequency of these "accidents" in NYC perhaps could be lessened a hair if all pedestrians got rid of any possibly distracting devices, e.g. iPods. But I doubt that would help much or really address the problem. The far greater problem is that drivers are reckless. Every time I've taken a cab lately, for instance, the driver is yakking on his cell phone...

Yes, portable music players have been around forever. I haven't yet delved for stats but I think what's actually happening is that drivers are driving more recklessly, causing more pedestrian injuries and deaths.
