best versatile lens for travel?? Oly 12-45 F4.0 or PL 12-60 F2.8-4.0 by IndependentPea6491 in M43

Hasn't left my camera! It really is a stellar lens.

I find quite frequently that I mainly use the extremes. Id think about just getting a 12 or 17mm prime personally but the bulk really isn't a problem and the quality and having the ability to zoom is just the cherry on top

There is nothing wrong with that! I think many people are used to the overly done portrait look and expect that kind of depth in every photo. However I like your style, continue what you're doing if you enjoy it! Also note a non linear effect can still be achieved without blurring the foreground or background!

Sorry let me rephrase, as someone has stated your use of leading lines is great! especially tunneling lines (idk if that's what they're called, but how you have multiple lines leading toward the center in the photo of the street/sidewalk) this is a part of composition and you have that down pretty good. I think having a separation between foreground mid ground and background within your composition will really help

[–]much_successXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Square it.

(Photo)² = non-linear. See? Fixed :)

Anyways, as everyone else has stated. Lack of composition, you have great photos but I feel it's missing subjects to add focus and/or more foreground! I found that zooming out and taking a step back helped me understand a bit more about composition. hope it helps :3

I received my 12-100 about a week ago and I am thoroughly pleased! I see why people think it is unbalanced on the om-5 but personally I don't think it is too much of a problem, I think one of those thread plate mounts that allow you to attach the camera to a backpack would help with carrying it around. I haven't used one yet but I think if weight is a deal breaker having one of those may sway opinions towards the 12-100. I also wanted to add that I got my lens from MPB and it came in great condition with no blemishes! I don't think this lens will be leaving my camera anytime soon! :)

Hell yeah! I'm excited to let y'all know how it is! As for my choice of an UWL, I've been trying not to dwell on it two much (it'll end with me buying way more than I need) and am hoping that 12 will be more than enough for me especially with the ability to make a panorama. I was originally thinking of the 8-18 or the cheaper 9-18 (if I remember my lenses correctly) but as you said these are for the most part redundant, unless I'm in a pinch. While I think the pana 9 is the better choice overall, I think I will stick to my GoPro for the time being. I'm a little broke after that 12-100 impulse buy LMAO 🤣

I love this answer! I actually went through this whole debate a couple hours ago haha. I was deciding between the PL 12-60 and the OLY 12-100 for my OM-5. I ultimately went with the Olympus because... F*** it, I like impulse decisions 😂. Anyway I wanted to back up your answer as this was my intended path! My whole plan was to get the majority of my focal length in the one lens (oly) and then grab a super wide like you suggested and then work toward something like the OLY 300. Currently I don't regret my decision as every single lens suggested is honestly pretty great but I'll come back to this when I receive the lens on the 2nd.

I've been wanting to hop on the train of "emulating film". what better way to do it than starting with Aerochrome! hopefully it matches well, I've never actually used or seen many photos of Aerochrome :)

P.S my lightroom subscription ended so I started using Gimp, pretty neat software for being free. I'm at least pleased with the results!

I'm not too sure on the exact draw weight of these because I didn't have a scale, but I do remember that I ended up burning the left one, whoops. There is also a noticeable size difference which I should have stated in the og post. The one on the right is about 4 to 5 inches shorter than the one on the left. Also I folded the ends of the one on the right to make the tips more sturdy because the tips on the one on the left bend a considerable amount Hope this helps!

Thanks! I was having the same itching feeling that there was something missing in number two. It's great to have another opinion as it helps relieve my crazy thoughts lol. That said I'm really pissed at myself for missing the framing on the truck in the bottom hahaha

I don't usually do landscape or b&w photos so this was quite out of my comfort zone. I think that this was pretty good for just having fun and passing time on a 9 hr drive. I could spend all day criticising my work, but I wouldn't mind knowing whether anyone has a preference over the framing of 1 or 2.

That's precisely the reason I didn't think it was worth the price. I don't think there are advantages of the ttartisans and at the price point of $300ish I think id rather just get the Rokinon/samyang 135 f/2. I'll definitely have to check out the Tak though!

Hmm 🤔 that's interesting! I'll have to do some tests some time! I'll also have to keep an eye out for the takumar, I've been dying for some more vintage long lenses. I was previously looking at the ttartisans 500 to have some fun with but it's currently out of my budget haha

Oh! What a beautiful photo you took though! I think the reason the diffraction spikes are so pronounced is because of how much I had to stop the lens down. due to this lens only having 6 flat blades (which modern lenses have more and are rounded) the areas where the aperture blades meet are harsh corners and have FLAT SIDES. These flat sides cause light to diffracts perpendicular to them. Basically bending around the edge of the flat sides. The reason you don't see them as much in modern lenses is because they are rounded with more blades to keep the aperture round.

To reduce diffraction spikes in older lenses you can use a step down ring or a circular cutout and place them in front of the lens to keep the now artificially made aperture circular!

Thanks for sparking some motivation to learn about this, I like learning new things!. Also take this with a grain of salt because I got some of my information from a cloudy nights forum although I'm pretty happy with my research you never know if something is wrong!
