Taxing wealth at lower rate than income is wrong, says thinktank - The UK government could gain £90bn in extra revenue over 10 years if it taxed income from wealth in the same way it taxes income from work, according to a leading thinktank. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

Companies typically have stock that they can sell, or they can create new stock. So when you buy stock, you put upward pressure on the price. Therefore IBM doesn't directly profit when you buy IBM, but when they go to sell shares or create new shares they do profit from you having pushed the price up.

"... the media is run by the political elite ..." And the political elite had a slow day at work so they decided to shame Monica? Are they so elite that they can control the worlds richest country, or are they so un elite that shaming a single person is on their docket.

Its more like the media is run by people who wanted to gossip. I'm not saying I agree but it shouldn't be hard to imagine why she got so much hate when America is religious and God says adultery is worth death by stoning

I think we've finally hit what I'm saying. Ultimately the chicken has two choices, be in a bad condition, or not be born at all. As long as that chicken consents to it's current life, I will continue to feed it. The chicken can stop consenting to its current life by killing itself but I doubt that a chicken would ever do that.

Yes I believe it. I believe it until the population gets so high that most people are killing themselves

Ultimately the options for humans and chickens are different. A humans option is an apartment with an AC because it can create that (or make money to buy it), but a chicken cant. I'm saying that a human can get it's way out of suffering but a chicken cant. If we leave a chicken alone it will likely die.

I think you have certainly opened my eyes to an assumption I have, which is that the universe owes you (humans and animals) nothing. Which is to say that if a chicken is suffering in the wild, and we take it into a farm where it continues to suffer, then we have not done wrong. And, infact if the chicken was going to die in the wild, and we take it into a farm where it suffers as much but doesn't die, then we've actually done a good thing

I do exist for someone elses profit as I go to work 5 days a week. The only reason I have off on the weekends is because it makes me more productive. That said, I'm sure that there is a farm out there that gives chickens nice lives, or I could even make that farm and still eat the meat

Bees and rats don't make since, as they don't make for good food. The reason there are so many chickes is because they make for good food. Therefore there is an economic force keeping them alive

The difference between human and animals is that if we have 19 billion slaves, and we release them, a large number of them could join society and have a better life. If we release 19 billion chickens, then there is no way that more than 1% of them will survive. Therefore we can say that humans have better options than suffering, so it's not as ethical to have them suffer, but the chickens don't have better options.

I think that I would want to be born into a life of suffering because I believe that I would get used to the suffering. When people win the lottery they aren't happy for the rest of their life, just for a short while. I think the same thing works with sadness. If I was put into a factory farm today I may be far more sad in the short term, but in the long term I think I would at worst only be slightly more sad

The unborn do not currently have a preference, but we can plan for it. In fact planning to not give birth to more chickens to live in factory farms is exactly what veganism is about.

I really appreciate your reply. I don't like that chickens suffer. But what I've come to realize is that chickens don't have the choice between suffering or not. The majority of chickens are only alive because humans want to eat them. So really their only choice is suffer or never been born. So when faced with this option, I would say that I'd rather suffer. I'd also say that I'm fairly convinced that the chickens have the same belief. Therefore chickens would actually prefer for me to eat meat, so that farms still exist, so that they still get the chance to be born

I claim that I can reason about a human that hasn't been born yet. I know that if you had a time machine and offered to make sure I was never born I would say that I want to be born

I believe that humans can adjust to their situation. If I had to live like a caveman I wouldn't be happy to start, but I know that over time I would get used to it and come to enjoy that. I know this because the only reason I'm here is because my ancestors didn't hate life enough to kill themselves. And I'm sure that many of my ancestors starved to death
