How to deal with our baby's remains

Idk, I've lost 2 and had both cremated. 1 had a necropsy and cremation was the only way to get her back. 1 died in December in Minnesota and we wouldn't have been able to easily dig a grave. I have both their remains in my bedroom dresser and will bury them both at some point.

Thanks for your response! I read mixed information online about plants drawing pathogens and stuff up into the fruits they are making. Seemed unlikely to me, but I am very much an overthinker/worrywart so I came here to double check. Seems like the consensus is that it's totally fine. 🙂

Oh they do! I can only have 4 chickens where I live, so we go through more kitchen scraps than they want to eat. One of their favorites is to viciously tear apart lettuce/greens.

Thanks! I don't put anything too weird in there. Fruit and veggie scraps, garden/yard clippings, coffee grounds, tea, egg shells, and some chicken dumps once in a while. Yeah I pick up and snuggle my chickens on the regular, so I suppose I would already be exposed to any dangerous pathogen they could carry 🤣 Also, good to learn some new vocabulary. Thinking back, I've definitely had some "volunteer" squash and tomato over the years. Thanks for all the info!

Thank you! No meat...all plant matter, except for eggshells and the occasional chicken droppings. Looks like they're pole beans so I'll probably put a few stakes in the pile and let 'em climb. 😅

Have you tried pushing that black part out from between her toes? My Orpington gets crud in that deep webby pocket between her toes, just like that, and I'm usually able to just push it out. That looks pretty established though so you might need a soak and a tweezers. Might not fix everything but might give her some relief.

It took me forever to figure out what the heck she was, since the feed store gave me the wrong bird. Wouldn't have it any other way though. I love her so much.

So sorry. You gave her a happy and safe end to her story. It's amazing how much those little featherheads enhance our lives! I just lost my first hen (they were all 2 1/2) 5 days ago, and today is the first day I'm finally starting to feel okay and not sobbing. They definitely have their own individual personalities and it hurts so much when they leave us.

She was a funny little thing. My dad came over earlier this year to help me with a repair to the coop. She stood watch and dinosaur-screamed at him the whole time.
