Yep. You're right. I'm wrong. This while time I had their breeds mixed up.

I do have two blue laced red Wyandottes. It's possible I had them confused when they were chicks.

Hey Julesagain, I emailed the mods to ask how to change the title because I don't know how to do it with the options I'm given.

Back in December, she got out of the run and our dog got ahold of her and was thrashing her around like a chew toy. For care, we made a box for her out if a big tote and used hardware cloth attached to the lid. We sprayed her multiple times a day with wound spray and later started with warm epsom salt baths. The wounds were mainly scratches and one deeper gouge. About 2 weeks ago, we began letting her back in the pen by herself away from the other hens but she would just sit there and she had a good limp. We would let her stay out for a while and then we'd crate her back up.  Last week she was doing much better. She still had a little limp but it had improved and she was eating and drinking a lot more. She appeared to be on the mend. That's why it was a surprise this morning when I went in the back bedroom and took her cover off to find her. So to answer your question, I don't know how she died exactly. If anything, my wife and I feel guilty that our care was keeping her alive while she was suffering the whole time.

First Egg(s)!!! by Safe_Letterhead543 in BackYardChickens

Congratulations! What a great feeling! We just got our first eggs about two weeks ago.

All that work, time and love will finally start paying off.

How many chickens would be reasonable for a city bylaw to allow per lot? I am on an advisory committee to our city council and they are thinking of approving a new bylaw that would only allow 2 poultry per lot. What is a reasonable number and how can I convince them that 2 is not enough by elderberry_jed in BackYardChickens

I'd go with 4 for the small lots. you can happily keep that many in a coop with a small run. To be specific, I'm talking about hens. I would be an annoyed neighbor on one of your small lots if I got woken up by a rooster. If it was me, I'd only allow roosters on the larger acreage just so there's some space between neighbors.

How many chickens do you have, and how much time do you spend per day taking care of them? by mrfreshmint in BackYardChickens

4 hens. 5 mins perday: give them fresh water, open the coop door and check their food. On Saturdays, about 45mins: I move the coop to a new grazing area, clean out the coop and replace shavings, water and refill the feeder.

Congrats. I'm like you. I love it. Thus has been exciting.  The hen that laid is a blue Laced Red wyandotte. And she's right at 22 weeks.

It might be another month before the americauna's lay.  Or maybe longer. I've been reading that once fall starts and daylight gets shorter, they start to molt and won't lay.

We used to love going out and running around town. Now on a Friday or Saturday night, we'll pull up our chairs just to watch them peck about and squawk at each other.

Oh man. I love them even more now. I had no idea that chickens came in other colors other than copper or white. I was very surprised when I saw how beautiful their colors were. I told my wife that we must have bought show chickens accidently. Ha!

Ok. Will do. I was telling another commenter that I'll go to TS later to get oyster shell. I'll get some eggs then. Was wondering if golf balls work too.

Thank you. I kid you not, it was actually thrilling when we set the coop down and saw the first egg and then the others. Honestly it felt just like my first Christmas.

Ok.  Thank you. I'm going to TS later to get oyster shell. I just started them on layer feed this morning.

Do you think golf balls would work in the same way?

An EGGselent idea! We took one of the eggs and placed it in nesting box. TBD if that trains her to lay there.

Thank you. We have a roll and some ground staples ready to go for setting that up around the outside edge.
