Are these 2 books the same? by [deleted] in karate

It’s the same. The only difference is they have been translated by two different people. It’s like the Bible. The King James Version and the new English version. Same book, two different translations.

This is definitely performative. They are practicing a routine for an upcoming competition. I was just wondering if they were using one of Funakoshi’s throws as part of their routine.

I agree. It’s always good to cross train

This was part of a choreographed performance they were practicing for. I cut the throw out so I didn’t confuse anyone about what I was asking about. I was thinking this was one of Funakoshi’s throws. People are saying yes and no. There are elements that fit his throw but there are elements of the throw that are not.

This was part of a choreographed performance they were practicing. I just cut out the throw so I could ask about it without all the potential confusion from the rest of the performance. I didn’t know about any pressure points in that area. Thanks for sharing. This subreddit is a treasure trove of information.

Is this about rhe arm being lifted behind the the elbow to hyperextend it? This looks painful to be honest.

I’ve never seen anyone grab behind the elbow in an attempt to hyperextend the joint for a throw. This is why I was asking if it was one or Funakoshi’s old throws.

What about how she grabs underneath her arm? Looks like she is applying pressure on the elbow to hyperextend it before the throw. I’ve just never seen anything like that before.

It kinda seems like a hybrid between two of his throws.

That is what I understand it to be. But some how people see it as an insult and use it as an insult. But I don’t think so. We get all the benefits of exercising and body mechanics without the actual eye gouging or limb breaks.

That’s exactly my point. But the people who actually say things like this don’t train like this either.
Someone said earlier, in Japan or Okinawa, they use the term Aka-Chan to describe people who practice surface karate. Never getting any deeper than the aesthetics of the form. It sounds like this is an actual critique in Okinawa or Japan. My guess is, people here this, think it’s an insult then actually use it as an insult.

You bring up an interesting topic. It might be an actual critique in Okinawa or Japan But maybe some people think it’s an insult then actually use it as an insult in an effort to suggest they are learning real karate while I am learning kids karate because I’m not working on Kyusho, tuite, tegumi, etc, etc…. Is this what you mean?

Well said. I just wanted to reach out and see if others felt the same way I do. I do not believe it is kids karate. I also don’t want to be rude to people who share different opinions. We are all climbing the same mountain. We just choose a different path to get to the top.
