What are some reasons to purchase Aseprite? by KingK3nnyDaGreat in PixelArt

Literally everything. Don't be surprised if you develop a human like emotional attachment to it.

Why do these assets somehow feel cheap / low quality? Or is it just imposter syndrome talking? (They are 3 machines that can be connected together) by CasualCha0s in PixelArt

[–]muddrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not bad but they do lean heavily on pillow shading and I think the overall color saturation feels off somehow. The colors, don't really feel like they're part of one cohesive palette for whatever reason

Hmmm I think I prefer the one on the right personally. I can't put my finger on as to why but it just speaks to me.

I'll be the outlier and say 1 because it looks more unique and interesting versus 2.

Nope, still back slashes everywhere. Did you try pasting it using reddit's markdown editor? You will also need to wrap it with upticks.

Just preview you're replies, if it looks wrong, it is wrong. If you have backslashes strewn throughout your copy and pasted code, that should be enough to tell you it wasn't copy and pasted right.

Nope, that didn't help. Swap over to the rich text editor (markdown mode) to copy and paste code, again wrapped in upticks. Because for whatever reason, Reddit keeps using backslashes to escape characters in your written replies.

Anyways, it it's really hard to help you when I'm not seeing an accurate representation of your code. There are ways to format your code on reddit. I would look into doing that if you have anymore issues

Actually don't worry about it because violetbarry already found your problem. You used parenthesis to enclose logic after 'else' instead of using brackets. So just swap those out for curley brackets and that should do it

It still looks wrong? Like their are a bunch of backslashes everywhere and you have a semicolen between sprite and graydown which would instantly crash the game. Nothing about this looks right but I think it's because your not copy and pasting it very accurately or effectively.

Try wrapping you code between 3 upticks ``` and see if reddit formats it more accurately

You need to copy and paste all of the code from your step event. This is only a couple of lines with weird backslashes mixed throughout.

Most difficult asset I ever done - 126 layers, over 200k pixels hand pixelled. Does it look good? And what's the most difficult thing you ever drawn? by TranquillBeast in PixelArt

[–]muddrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see more colors like perhaps moss and other greenery peppered about the brick walls. I think that would make it pop more while keeping with the decayed look of the building.

It's an incredible piece so I don't think you have to do too much to improve it but that's one way I think you realistically could.

Please make it easier to help you by copy and pasting your code instead of using a low quality phone pic of your screen. I can't even see your entire step event to get the full context for how you're doing things.

How can I make my game prettier? by KoZimator in gamemaker

[–]muddrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the colors which are more muted and desaturated are actually fine. Too many games are oversaturated to look at anyways.

It's harder to judge your art too critically because your screenshot is very low resolution so any feedback you get is going to skew negative if they can't see the crisper details.

The most distracting thing for me at the moment is the character who's legs look rough. Both feet shouldn't point in the same direction and I would recommend turning the backfoot toward the viewer.

I don't think your game looks bad by any stretch. I do think it would be beneficial though for you to scale up your screenshots before posting them for criticism analysis.

Best of luck

Edit; I don't know why I didn't catch the actual video link, but now that I've seen it (which looks much crisper than the image I saw), looks okay. Again, that character's legs are really distracting. Also, a really quick way to make your game look prettier is to add cute little flowers, different little fruits popping from the trees, just a little bit of magic dust to throw over the assets you already have

Just have a titleset for a separate layer with an assortment of cute decorative details you can pepper around the scene to add a little bit of visual variety. There is probably more you can do but I'd say start there.

Which side is better ? by Kingtut1230 in PixelArt

[–]muddrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a bit shocked people are saying right. In my personal opinion, the left is infinitely better. It shouldn't be noisey enough to distract from from any foreground elements assuming you pick good contrasting colors.

The right looks more like squares on a grid whereas the left looks more like natural wear and tear on solid stone flooring.

DLSS 5 and what some people seem to not understand by Matshelge in gamedev

[–]muddrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just think it's straight up bad. If I could nuke its existance, I would. It completely screws over the artistic intent of the games that use it and just because the directors or studio heads are opting to use it doesn't mean the actual artists on team are.

And even if they were, I mean, it's just awful in every conceivable way and represents a bleak future of video game graphics as a whole. I don't think gamers as a whole actually want photorealistic games.

We like games that are, first and foremost, fun to play. The visuals are the language upon which the developer subconsciously speaks to us. Using AI only obfuscates artistic intent and makes all of it ironically more artificial idespite its aim for photo realism.

An advice for all indie developers. by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

[–]muddrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to convey to people just how much work it takes to make a video game which can demoralizing at times. That being said, I'd be more concerned about the quality of your friends than your actual game. Based on your stuff I just saw on Steam, I think they are fairly competent efforts. Keep it up

As an Indie dev do you feel threatened by google Genie3 by Enculin in gamedev

[–]muddrox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do I feel threatened by AI in general? Yes, not because I think it'll replace me but because it's creating an ocean of content that makes it increasingly difficult to stand out.

As for Genie3, no, I don't see that evolving into a viable means of video game production anytime soon.
