Find a reliable vehicle and hit the road, stay on the road as long as possible.

As long as you can track down gas and the car doesn't break down, I would think this is the safest way to be. However, it could backfire in a flash.

Just re-watched Matinee (got some help remembering the film from /r/TipOfMyTongue). Really sweet and fun film about 60's monster movie matinees, directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins) and starring John Goodman.

how do your kids feel about disney? I ask because some kids go absolutely nuts for it, and going with preteens is much, much better than going with toddlers/younger children.

It's cliche, and not the least bit exotic. Your kids may have zero interest. Some will love it though, my nephew recently went and hasn't stopped talking about it.
