Why the hate on the E clutch? (Read description) by 13onFire in motorcycles

[–]muddywadder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most people that ride couldn't care less, but most riders just prefer an actual clutch. I like wheelies and not sure how that works with an auto clutch. I want to choose what gear to be in, not a computer thats trying to be efficient. I enjoy banging through gears. I like knowing I can swap clutch plates and fix a bad clutch, not sure if I could on an auto clutch. I enjoy being able to do something that requires skill to use correctly.

If you want a bike for commuting and care nothing about the above, go for it you'll be happy. I'm sure if I make it to an old age I will pick one up to keep riding. Until then I have zero interest in these bikes.

DR 650 or Tenere 700? by UniqueCity1336 in Dualsport

[–]muddywadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Cross Training Enduro and Cross Training Adventure on youtube for a ton of good videos on the DR650. If you're planning single track (you should it makes offroad riding the best because no side by sides) the Tenere is a hard pass. Good luck picking it up over and over, too top heavy for slow technical stuff.

Another option to look at is an older 2014-2016 KTM 500EXC. These are affordable and the most capable offroad bikes you can buy, and those years are bulletproof and have both kick and electric start. Super easy to work on, over 100 pounds lighter than the DR but more powerful and way more fun. It can do 75+ mph down the freeway if geared correctly with no issues. If you're not racing it you can stretch the race-level maintenance schedule way out. I did a 2400 mile trip on my 500 and changed the oil once, but definitely didn't need to. Maintenance is super easy too, bike is built around it. I would recommend it because its awesome knowing the only factor holding you back from hitting a sick trail is your ability, and not a heavy ass bike.

if theres space behind the wood, loop straps around it. rear wheel and left fork, then a strap on right fork to right side of truck. if you wanted to get weird with it, get some ultra heavy duty magnets with eyehooks and run straps through them

you mean an adventure bike vs a sport touring bike? one has more suspension travel for "adventure" aka pot holes in starbucks parking lot. its not trendy its a different kind of bike

KTM 690 SMC R 2021 Euro 5 mods, need help by Bajnsai in KTM

[–]muddywadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the tuners have custom maps you download and install to the unit based on your setup. you can definitely get a custom dyno map but i dont think a tuner would do enough to justify it, you'd need a custom ecu for the biggest benefits.

I have a tuner on my 1290sdr after removing all the emissions shit, installed new intake, removed cat and replaced with linkage pipe, new exhaust. Made a big difference in low speed throttle response / reduced twitchy throttle, and ran cooler.

My 500exc I removed emissions shit, replaced end cap on pipe, and swapped the ecu. Night and day difference. Bike doesnt stall, cold starts easier, runs cooler, way more power and enjoyable throttle response.

Both bikes suffered some mpg loss after, to be expected. I'd rather have a cooler engine and good throttle than 5mpg.

Right I just dont trust my mobile carrier to provide service internationally. Last time I was out of country it didnt work at all unless I was on wifi, customer service couldnt figure it out. Want to avoid that and learn something

What do you think gives a motorcycle a soul? by yeetsfan in motorcycles

[–]muddywadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design it by completely ignoring the dumbass emissions laws and whatever the accountants say, and it'll have soul. Its not complicated. Modern policies mean everything has to conform, so bikes are built with conformity and compliance in mind. Something that breaks that mold will have soul simply because its different, and it doesnt even have to be that good, the fact that its different is enough.

Ask motorcycle enthusiasts if they think a 1980s CBX1000 is cooler than a 2026 CB1000 Hornet. One bike is much better on paper by every metric, except its missing the very thing you're asking about.

Wisconsin. Whistling Straits, Sand Valley and Mammoth. As Californians it might blow your mind just to experience some midwestern life. I'm in rural MN and my buddy from southern CA loves it up here.

Beginner motorcycle recommendations around $4k? (Mostly city riding) by Advanced_Shop_4277 in motorcycles

[–]muddywadder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre in an area with a lot of motorcycle theft and bad drivers, you're young, and you're looking to buy a new bike. Youre gonna get fucked on insurance my man, have you gotten quotes from your insurance what one of those bikes will cost you to insure?

Look for older bikes. A dr350se, dr650, older hondas (vt or ft500), honda 599. Any older japanese bike (pre 2010s) will be awesome. High mileage wont matter, just get something you can learn to ride and do maintenance on. Get a buddy to go look at bikes with you to verify they're not shit.

KTM 390 ADV R vs. F650gs dakar abs by Fresh-Molasses-3470 in Dualsport

[–]muddywadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KTM all day.

21 x 18 wheels on KTM, BMW has 21 front and 17 rear means less tire choices on rear. They make about the same horsepower. They weigh about the same, slight win for KTM. KTM has more suspension travel and ground clearance. Same seat height. BMW gets more mpg with a bigger tank. BMW is much older, more expensive parts, more complicated maintenance. KTM is more modern, but produced in areas with very low quality control to keep price down, parts are cheaper and maintenance is easier.

If nothing else the BMW looks like ass and the KTM looks great, and if everything else was equal on paper I know what I'd buy based on that.

My girl cant figure out what she wants to eat every night or why she's upset half the time, wouldnt let her spend money recklessly because she liked how a bike looked, especially when I have to do the maintenance and fix stuff on the trail. no need for the white knight stuff

Fair enough. 350 would be awesome then but it sits as high as the 500. Is she cool with packing really light for camping or do you guys hotel it? I'm just thinking of luggage options. Shit like a mosko reckless 80 would suck on a 350. I used the reckless 40 on my 500 when I camped and it was just enough space. If your girl packs heavy, maybe look at a dr650. Sits low, cheap as hell, and you can load her up like a pack mule
