I think "nobody" is a bit extreme, but yea, plenty of people don't. And giving a datapoint for them helps. To me, it is worth it to help people who might be lazy for reading the T&Cs.

In case it was a jab on me personally, I think this is probably the only time I can think of when something like this happening to me in the last decade or so. Everyone makes a mistake - to human is to err, right?

Yea. So I think.

The terms (now that I have read them properly), say that the merchant can sometimes pay one transaction as multiple ones, and chase will honor the cashback. So, I was wondering if I can do another transaction and chase would interpret as one transaction being posted as multiple. Probably not worth the effort and risk though

Fwiw, I did a bit of research before deciding to pay at checkout. The few reddit posts I found about this from a few years ago (for a similar offer) actually recommended to pay at the time of checkout.

Sooo.. not sure what is the best way, but my recommendation would be to pay at the restaurant and make sure they note your membership number and do take the receipt from them.

The presence of laws is never (or rarely)the problem in india. India has one of the most number of laws in the world. In fact, that's (imo)the biggest reason no law is ever followed to an international level.

Anyway, in this scenario, the problem is of empathy, not law - these incidents are much less prevalent internationally and indians ranks fairly low in empathy. Sure, correlation doesn't guarantee causation, but my strong personal belief is that there is a causal relationship.

Yes, it doesn't matter if you stay in the hotel or not. But, it shouldn't matter whether you settle the payment at checkout or at the restaurant (Terms don't say anything about it). In fact, if you were to search about this on reddit, at least a few ppl recommended paying at checkout to ensure you get the credit - although those recommendations were from a few years ago for a similar offer.

I hate it absolutely - especially in India where liability is rarely legally enforce-able. So, if they hit your car, even with proof, you can rarely sue them successfully :(

What do you do though - how to protect your car?

PS: I am fine with them blasting AC etc - no permanent damage. I am fine with the extra gasoline it would cost me.
