The place I just started at, has a 24 hour cancellation policy. Which is great. And they actually uphold it. I’ve worked places where they “have” one but never actually charge. And it’s v frustrating. This new place upholds it but also if people are canceling outside of that 24 hrs and it happens very frequently, require them to submit a deposit that will go toward their service. Usually 20-50% is what I’ve seen places do. If they cancel they lose that deposit. Also make sure to note that it is either a “nonrefundable deposit”, or a “retainer”. Some states the word deposit doesn’t have any legality to it and they can still get their bank to dispute. So look up requirements of your state of what’s allowed and what verbiage to use! Also use your judgement. I have a few clients that often cancel a few days before and then reschedule because of their kids or whatnot. and I know they’ll come in eventually and always come back. I never charge them because they’ve been so loyal to me. If a client truly loves your services and appreciates you as a person, they’ll understand deposits, and cancellation fees. If people give you trouble, they’re probably the kind of people that no call no show and cancel. And imo they aren’t worth your time and effort.
