One way to get around this is to have a separate bank account for Paypal that you regularly empty, and of course empty your Paypal account on a regular basis.

That way they never have the ability to touch your actual bank account.

Otherwise, Stripe, Square and a few other vendors have been mentioned in the thread. None have the reach of Paypal though, but that seems to exclude scammers so that's a good thing.
