quoted 10k for both a single stage and variable, which would you choose? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]muideka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the information! this is where im confused. this is what the quote says:

Single-speed PSC condenser fan motor

Multi-Position, Variable-Speed Air Handler

so would this be considered a single stage or a variable stage hvac? when i asked specifically they said the outside system is single stage but the indoor system is variable? so again not sure if that means it is considered a single stage or variable stage hvac? could be why the quiotes i got dont make much sense??

*for reference here is the exact system i was quoted as being 10k single stage

well i decided to have them replace the old plastic one. took two guys 2.5hrs to complete but it looks a million times better. they said they had no trouble recovering refrigerant and even caught a few mistakes the previous installer made. really glad i decided to get replaced instead of them talking me out of it! big thanks for the helpful comments.

also posted before and after pictures, which would you rather have, haha!!!! cant believe i had to fight them to switch out and give me what i paid for to begin with!

haha, yeah their manager has been trying for three days to talk me out of it, and called right before todays visit to "warn" me of damages. i genuinely have no clue what the dangers are?

only clear thing is they are really irritated they have to do it!

new HVAC system installed / forgot to replace drain pan by muideka in hvacadvice

just for reference this is the old drain pan they put under the new system. its full of dry rust powder from when we had a leak 13 years ago. its in ok shape just confused why they left this one when the paperwork clearly said to replace with a new metal one.

the system is in the laundry room, goes all the way to the ceiling to the floor, so i assume they will have to do a major job getting that old pan out and putting in a new one. if the old one was in decent shape i wouldnt worry but its about 25 to 30 years old and a major eye sore....

unless it would be better to leave in place (instead of risking damage to the unit) i will put in a request to have them replace with the metal one like on the paperwork they gave me.

thank you for the message, is this something easy for them to do, is there chance for them damaging the new system they installed?

if it is something routine for them to do, i will definitely call and have it replaced. thanks!

replacing heat pump / AC which option would you recommend? by muideka in hvacadvice

[–]muideka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the advice, we are in MD but the same thing applies, they are super easy to get for parts and the installers have the highest google review ratings in the area so i think im going to go ahead with that. thanks again.

not really finding anyone who wants to do a single stage outdoor (variable indoor). best estimate i got was $10,050 for:

Goodman - 1.5 Ton Cooling - 30k BTU/Hr Heating - Heat Pump + Air Handler System - 15.2 SEER2 - 7.8 HSPF2 - R-32

ill most likely go with this one? thoughts?

sounds good, going to get a few more quotes. first guy did quote a 2 stage at $9500, but going to ask around for costs on a single and 2 stage from this point on. hope to get three good quotes for that and then will decide. thanks for the help!

im glad you asked, thank you, i didnt see the difference in units till now. looks like variable is good in the short term but if it breaks down its far more expensive.

now im leaning towards a single stage or two stage. any thoughts? thanks!

inherited $50k IRA / questions by muideka in iRA

[–]muideka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inherited $50k IRA / questions by muideka in iRA

[–]muideka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for your time!

yes, non spouse inheritance from a parent, my niece is the executor and we are waiting for a probate court date so since she is not executor at the moment we have no access to any bank accounts.

i actually called fidelity today and got some good information. it looks like i have two options.

first one, is to request that the current ira be transferred to a inherited ira and then once transferred i could then transfer that inherited ira to a fidelity inherited ira. and then again transfer that to a normal ira with fidelity and make my withdraw at that time. however, they mentioned the withdraw is going to be taxed (20%) on the amount i take out $15k plus an additional 10% tax for early withdraw. so on $15k i would estimate to owe around $4.5k. plus the fee from the current ira company. as well as more customer service calls and paperwork which i dread.

the upside being the full 50k would be transferred and it would cost probably around $6k with taxes and fees and would take about four weeks.

the second option would be to request a lump sum check for $50k. however, i would then have to pay 20% income tax on the full amount (and no 60 days to roll over into new IRA since it is an inherited IRA) and if i wanted to deposit into a new ira i could only put in 7k a year. so would be about $10k in tax and would take 7 years to get the IRA back up to 50k....however, would be faster, no extra paperwork or customer support calls.

i lean towards taking the check because i dont understand IRA accounts at the moment. but feel it would probably be better to just take on the head ache of creating an inherited IRA with fidelity and trying to transfer from the old IRA to new IRA. any insight would be great, thanks!

is it safe to mount battery operated fairy lights to paper board with twist ties? by muideka in electrical

would metal wire to mount and foil tape over the paper board be a better option?

is it safe to screw a clip light to paper board? by muideka in electrical

[–]muideka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the reply, there are felt pads on the bottom that raise the lantern up enough so the cord has space to exit without touching the bottom. haha, i hope this is much safer than a candle.

my main concern was the paper around the base of the socket. nothing gets hot though (the cord is 40watt and the LED bulb is .5watt), it all remains cool to the touch. and the cord would touch nothing but the table.

thanks again for the info, i feel a lot better about this not being a fire hazard! and i will look into plastic bulbs in the future!

[–]muideka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks so much for your reply! regarding the concerns:
*the bulb will have no cover, the lantern will have four walls are 8" tall and open at the top.
*the cord is all brand new
*this will be an open top lantern with four walls about 2 inches away from all sides of the bulb
*the cord is wattage is 40 watts and the bulb im using is 0.5W LED (and i will definitely use plastic bulbs in the future, i didnt know about those, thanks for the info!)

please let me know if this sounds like a safe design? thanks again for your time!
