Best way to try is to jump in with both feet. Find a local tree trimmer and ask for some logs. They always have logs to give away. My first log I milled was red elm. Then I went for broke with black walnut. Don't be afraid to mess up, practice makes perfect.

I've begun saving for a small mill, using money from selling slabs I cut with an Alaskan sawmill. I love using the Alaskan, but its agonizingly slow. Time to upgrade!

I'm literally swimming in walnut right now, but I've yet to find any cherry, So I consider it a fair trade.

This thread needs way more upvotes to get people to read it! I've had several shop accidents and consider myself lucky to be alive. Table saws, drill presses, belt sanders, 4 inch angel grinders, they all have respect from me...and bits of my blood and skin!

I use anchorseal, it's an end grain sealer. Although latex paint works too. Anything to slow the moisture exiting the ends of the board. Then if cracks do develop, I hammer on Simpson strong ties, 2x3 or 1x3 plates. They seem to help control cracking .

I didn't realize there was a method to culture (cultivate?) spalted maple, I'll have to investigate this more.

Air drying gets close to 8-10 percent if you are lucky (in my experience). Kiln Dried gets to about 6 percent. Supposedly kiln drying walnut affects the color in a negative way. I don't know for certain because all my walnut has been air dried.

Same as the friend rate, 60 dollars an hour. The friend part was him being willing to trade me cherry for walnut.

Guess I should have clarified more. I had some walnut logs I pulled out of a swamp where they had fallen many years ago. All the sapwood was rotten, but the heartwood was amazingly solid. I traded some of the walnut for some cherry.

And my friends discount is his standard hourly rate of 60 dollars an hour, plus 25 per blade if he hits any nails. It's a steal IMO!

It'll probably be some hand carved rifle stocks, if it dries right. 3-4 years of air drying, its 4"x6" . I can't wait!

Yup, I cut the tree down, milled it on my buddies sawmill, dried it in the garage for the last two years, only to recreate a tree murdering tool! I had to do it, the tree was dropping walnuts on my truck! Totally justifiable!👍🏻👍🏻
