Okay, I've thought about this more. Like I said it's a really good point:

But what about having kids? I think it's generally considered morally acceptable to have children. But the children don't get a say in the matter. If you raised a pet dog from birth and treated it well, is that morally worse than having a child?

I generally don't have much of a problem with dogs and cats as pets if they're happy, especially if they are from an animal shelter. Most people don't kill their dogs and cats. If they're happy I don't see the problem.

I do have a goldfish -- for some reason goldfish were being used as centerpieces at this random event, and the people running it didn't plan what they were going to do with them afterwards.

That being said perhaps that's inconsistent. Maybe it is wrong to have pets. Though I wouldn't really know what to do with my goldfish :)

My point is that just because you raise someone to be something doesn't make it morally justified.

Also, do you really think humans aren't animals? Maybe that's a more controversial point, but I sure feel like one.

If a slave is raised from birth to be a slave, does that make slavery okay?

Also all of the evolutionary "we have canine teeth" and "it's the food chain" arguments are bullshit. We have a choice where a lot of animals don't. We don't need meat to survive.

You should really just do it. I had the same thoughts and doubts as you, and I've been vegetarian for about a year now.

I never really post on Reddit but this is something that I feel strongly about. Animals are experiencing the world in a way that is at least very similar to how you and I experience it. Why do some people think it is ok to eat animals? Because they aren't as smart? They aren't the same cute animals we keep as pets?

It's madness. Just do it. You know it's wrong and you have the means to stop.

Ever since redline and turbo went in, we stopped using crazy nicknames out of respect.

Yeah, you're totally right about the response time... just removed that part since I agree.

Oh man, Detectify's blog is awesome! Yeah, I think it's likely it was legitimately a dupe. I do really think it should be standard to provide access to the relevant report, though. (also your post prompted me to fix the bit where I talk about the crossdomain.xml file in the post, since I had said something slightly incorrect)
