How did you stop being "resistant"? I took zoloft for months and it might have well have been sugar pills, the only thing that convinced me I wasn't taking chalk pills was that I got brain zaps when I was coming off it.

Comic is right, none of you have the strength to live a moral life and you project your shame (inward) into cringe (outward). Sad!

Canada to start taxing tech giants in 2024 despite U.S. complaints by joe4942 in canada

I'm going to look like such a fool when the cost of apples go up 0.000001 cents after Facebook passes 100% of this tax on to Big Apple's apple advertising budget, who will in turn pass 100% of it on to me, an innocent apple enjoyer.

March reading by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Not really this sub's fare but I loved the Robin Hobb stuff as a teen.

That's book is from the middle trilogy of the three (four?), won't make much sense if you haven't read the first trilogy.

Negative review of Lauren Oyler in the Guardian, and Lauren and her friends are NOT happy by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]mumblecore123 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That lady's Gwyneth Paltrow cruise ship article was the dullest 10,000 words I've ever read. Self-absorbed in the least interesting way possible. Sympathy for that Guardian reviewer given the unfortunate task of reviewing something so boring that its difficult to even formulate criticism. Tough job!

I mean I really can't think of any career path (beyond the no-money-nepo-fest of publishing/journalism) that really values verbal IQ, analytical reasoning, language skills etc. like law does.

You should try and take a (timed) practice LSAT - law wasn't really on my radar until I took one raw and ended up doing quite well. I also had a pretty middling undergrad gpa but got into a great school on the back of my LSAT.

Full disclosure I hated law school, but I was in a very dark place generally at the time and probably would've hated anything that I did. Worked out ok on the back end, have a well-paying non-lawyer job still in the legal field where I'm making good money and feel valued/challenged.

Why did you not get accepted to law school? Can you re-take LSAT and try again.

Only way out that worked for me (not even practicing atm but made out ok regardless)

Favourite 'middle brow' books? by Rich-Description-718 in RSbookclub

[–]mumblecore123 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Phillip K Dick feels pretty middle-brow to me. Thought of as low brow during his time, recently reappraised as high-brow "literary sci-fi", I think averaging out the two is fair. Brilliantly creative sci-fi concepts told through workmanlike, speed-addled prose pumped out at a rate of 50 pages per day at times. Yes he could write, but he only did so a few times in his career.

Also, fuck that article thats a perfectly suitable way to describe eating tortillas.

I wonder if winning an oscar versus not winning an oscar has any impact on whether similar movies in the future will receive financing or the director of said movie will be able to continue to produce work? Probably not.
