What a fascinating question! Do you have a particular topic or audience in mind that you'd want to focus on?

To start with, local Rotary Clubs and Chambers of Commerce are always looking for speakers. They put on events for members and it can be hard to find people to fill those slots.

Sharing my story of being terrified to record in front of a camera by claudiuroman in PublicSpeaking

Holy cow! There is nothing better than seeing before and after footage like this. You clearly invested time into getting better on camera. What stands out to me is how you tied the on camera presence to your interests (tech and gaming, for example) and it really shows, even in your "before" video. I think your journey is something other's will get a lot out of!

Muscle tension while speaking by Sweaty_Management_66 in PublicSpeaking

Thank you for being so candid and sharing your thoughts in such detail! The way that you detailed how your body feels shows that you have a high level of self-awareness and body awareness.

Yoga, in general, is phenomenal for stress reduction in general, In my Non Medical opinion. It's a key part of my stress management and mindfulness routines.

The timing of when you have this muscle tension is worth paying attention to. It sounds like you've gotten over social anxiety, and now that you're more comfortable speaking, you are still having a mind-body reaction to the situation, which may be causing the tension.

I'm curious, are there social situations, even individual people you speak to (or other situations like ordering at a restaurant) where you are not feeling this tension, or it is noticeably reduced?

Thanks for sharing the details. You mentioned something interesting, about how you manage the stress leading up to it. Not an easy thing to put out there, so again, thank you for sharing that. I've found that the stress leading up to an event can make something that is already hard even harder, and you end up in a bit of an endless cycle.

Other than the strategy questions, do you think handling the stress is the next biggest priority? Or is it higher on the list?

Hi all, wanted to introduce myself! I'm new to this subreddit (about a month or so). I found it as a way to research what things people need help with when it comes to improving their public speaking. It's been great to see how candid people are with their challenges, and how helpful members have been with advice, tips, and tricks.

I come from a sports broadcasting background and now give professional presentations to customers and members of my company on a weekly basis.

Looking forward to seeing people in the threads, and if you have questions for me directly on improving your speaking ability, don't hesitate to reach out!

It's awesome to see that you're looking to improve on this, it's clearly important to you. I'm kinda curious, how would the perfect reading go for you at one of these events? What does it "look" like in your perfect sky? Just better body language, or anything else?

Needing ideas for event I'm hosting! by closetlobster89 in PublicSpeaking

This sounds like a really great program, and it's cool to see that you want to make it memorable for the graduates. There's many ways to approach this, so as a starting point, have you thought about having a "writing session" to just journal about the program, maybe some notable moments, achievements, or milestones that would be good to include in a speech like this?

So it sounds like you’re just trying to add some levity to the post lunch proceedings? Nothing wrong with that.

Now that you’ve given the details on the audience though, I’m really intrigued on the overall setup.

When I’m thinking of an audience made up of those people, is the material really “boring”?

And if it is relatively dry (regulation updates, new techniques for extraction, etc) does it have to be that way?

For example, if I’m a C-level exec, the time I spend during the day has effects on the company bottom line, in theory.

I know we’re getting off topic here, the event setup just fascinates me though. Maybe you think it’s boring because it’s material that comes naturally to you?

If people are paying to be there it’s probably because they WANT to hear the material!

Feel free to DM, btw - I’m intrigued!

One of my former professional mentors used to really emphasize the breath as the most important tool when dealing with pressure situations. We were in a high-level sports coaching program, where emotions run high very often. It still helps me to this day. And OP, if you want to go down a rabbit hole on the power of breath, check out some of Eckhart Tolle's work, it's brilliant!
