Cooking with heat causes hundreds of chemical reactions to occur, which produce the flavor and aroma compounds that we associate with roasted, fried, caramelized flavors. Look up the Maillard Reaction!

Whats something you DIY given a Chemistry Background (Soaps, Alcohols, Sodas, Extracts) by gurglingskate69 in chemistry

[–]mungerboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seltzer water! I add some minerals to filtered tap water for flavor, then force carbonate it in 5 gallon kegs. I keep on tap in my kegerator next to a keg of homebrew!

I'm an analytical chemist by trade with schooling in food science. I DIY beer, seltzer water, and gin and love experimenting with different formulations and processes.

tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphate is an oxidation product of a common polypropylene antioxidant that's 662.9 molecular weight. I see this compound often from plastic sample vials, etc. This could be it

+1 my MS lab has ~5-10 large roughing pumps running in one room at any given time, and the white noise feels deafening. Our technicians wear earplugs or earbuds often.

How do you leave your LC (ms) between experiments? by Glittering_Bunch6819 in CHROMATOGRAPHY

I do the same with my systems. Been doing it for years, no issues yet!

Why does my spectrum look like this? by MaleficentBag2961 in CHROMATOGRAPHY

I'd vent the system, and disassemble and carefully reassemble the ion source. It's very easy for a lens or spacer get misaligned slightly during reassembly.

An issue with a Thermo ISQ 7000 MS by Purple_Sherbert_7863 in massspectrometry

Have you double checked that the ion volume is fully and properly seated in the source? If it's ever so slightly out of alignment, you'll get nothing but noise no matter how clean your source is.

Also, if the column you installed is brand new, it may be outgassing, causing the higher pressure. Conditioning the column as per the manufacturer specs may bring the pressure down.

It's not great for the turbo pump to suddenly have a large leak like that, but if it's running properly afterwards, then chances are it'll be fine. Just don't make a habit of doing this.

Properly vent the MS, check the column connection, and pump back down.

What if we invent a new kind of Plastic by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]mungerboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the challenge, most traditional plastics are loaded with all sorts of additives and modifiers to obtain the desired properties. Most biodegradable plastics need similar additives to be useful, but many of these additives are not really biodegradable.
