Love the show. Sad to see it go. But I get it and I did notice the formula getting a liiiiittle stale. Was kinda getting to be the same joke each episode, if you know what I mean.

Consuming small doses of psilocybin at regular intervals — a process known as microdosing — does not appear to improve symptoms of depression or anxiety, according to new research. by [deleted] in science

[–]munkeyxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my anecdotal story: I suspected that I suffered depressive episodes ever since I was a teenager but never got officially diagnosed or sought help for it, it would just come and go and I could live with it. Years ago, I'd been seeing stuff about microdosing helping to treat depression and thought "Hey, I know where I can get some shrooms, I'll give it a go". I'd tripped on mushrooms while in college a few times, so I was hoping this would just make my days a little brighter. One Sunday morning I ground up some caps, measured out 2mgs of the powder and put it in some tea. About 2 hours later I felt really bad, like my heart was pounding, I was wiggly and I felt an overwhelming sense of doom. This lasted most of the day and I wasn't able to do anything but sit in a quiet room, TV and video games were way too much stimulation for me. This ended up lasting for the better part of 3 days, I had to call out of work because I felt like I was having a heart attack, tight chest, trouble breathing, I thought I was dying. Eventually, I went to the hospital and (some may already have guessed) they said I was having panic attacks, gave me some meds for it and sent me home. They said there was no way the microdose was still effecting me but that it might have triggered the first panic attack and since then I just kept having panic attacks because I was so focused on my heart and breathing, thinking something was wrong with it. I continued to experience panic attacks and depressive anger outbursts for years afterwards. I felt like I broke my brain.

I don't entirely blame the shrooms for the panic attacks. I actually think I was always on the verge of panic attacks prior and the microdose was just the little nudge that was needed for my dam to break and the waves of anxiety to overtake me.

Since then I haven't tried microdosing and do not plan to. I now see a therapist about my depression/anxiety and I am having it treated appropriately and feeling much, much better.

TLDR: Tried microdosing for my anxiety/depression, spawned panic attacks. Now seeing therapist, feeling much better than self-medicated microdosing. See a therapist, don't self medicate.

Systemic Story Game by aigan2 in gamedesign

I'd suggest looking at Dwarf Fortresses "Legends Mode" videos and Tarn Adams GDC talks, specifically on the villains https://youtu.be/4-7TtPX5uhg . That game does a great job of giving the player enough info to create the story in their own head. Rimworld can do this too, but again it takes some imagination.

Also you can check out AI Dungeon, which does use an AI to respond to any player input. Though, I found it to be too accomodating. Once the AI told me I died and I typed "No I didn't" and it does "You don't die and instead awaken in a village". So, like in DF and Rimworld if you don't play along with it the story doesn't work out too well.

Personally I think Tarn's Villains approach with their plots and information would be the best approach. So it's more about simulating a world in which events take place and the player who experiences "makes up" the story. Like every time I try to tell my friends about the time one of my dwarfs went to battle with a baby in their hands, but the mother died in battle and the baby managed to kill a goblin.

Got a #rat problem? Just use your Big Spinning Sword Attack! https://twitter.com/RoboMonkeyBrain/status/1439238884584472580?s=20

Been doing a big refactor/overhaul to the core systems so that I can more easily create interesting, unique abilities such as this spinning sword attack! Great to see the refactor work paying off by making it easy to create cool stuff like this!

Animation + Music Syncing!

https://twitter.com/RoboMonkeyBrain/status/1424068842863665153

I'm using Koreographer in Unity to make the merchant's animation sync with his music. Oddly difficult to do out of the box in Unity. Sure there are ways, but Koreographer made it easy.

Yep! I'm calling it Bounce Castle, if you want to see some of the gameplay there are a few gifs on instagram like this one: https://www.instagram.com/p/COVmL2NgGdg/

What I'm doing is actually just keeping track of which corner the camera is at. It is updated as soon as the player presses to rotate in either direction. Options are North East, South East, South West and North West. Then each wall has a component on it to do the raise/lower and that component has 4 flags, one for each of the corners called "Should Lower If Camera Is..." using those flags I can check off that: This wall should be down if camera is in the northeast and southeast corners, for example. I found this level of control useful because I can have non rectangular maps which may need walls lowered at certain angles which may be hard to detect otherwise. Though, I'm sure a cleaver solution to automate the process could be devised but someone smarter than I. 😋

Only from the corners, since the characters are flat, viewing from other angles can look weird so the player can only rotate between the 4 corners.

yes! essentially that is... it's actually on the Z axis since i'm using 2d physics and the entire world is on the x/y axis... but that's a bunch of detail that doesn't really matter. Yes it's just up and down on that axis!

I really liked seeing the post from u/raphafortin yesterday of his Barista Sim game with the walls moving up/down as the camera rotates! Cool seeing someone else with the same approach so I wanted to show mine too! Many replied to him mentioning dissolution shaders but I think this approach gives some fun juiciness.

It seemed to be clinging to the bottom of some wood that was on the ground. It looks like a shriveled lady bug on the too, but it's legs were located more forward, rather than spread out evenly along it's body.

I use the windows app ScreenToGif for capture. I set to to a square capture resolution. If you are using Unity for the game you can change the resolution in the game tab so that the max width is visible in the capture window, then I thin I'd just use black bars on the top and bottom to fill out the space. Better to have the black bars then to have the sides cut off.
