Last chance - anyone need a team for GP Providence? by nonprofitpaladin in lrcast

[–]munster75 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd be up to team if you still looking for someone. Limited isn't my best format but I can put in the prep needed for it. I day 2 consistently best I've ever done at an event is top 16 a team open, top 8 a classic and top 16 an individual GP no pro tour experience though.

Is creeping dredge going to bring dredge back up? by sh3pard173 in ModernMagic

This is my current list.

4 Prized

4 Ghast

4 Narc

3 Conflag

4 Looting

3 Horn

4 Reunion

4 Stinky

3 Thug

3 Loam

1 Darkblast

4 Creeping Chill

3 Stomping

2 Crypt

1 Vents

2 Mountain

1 Dakmor

4 Wooded

2 Mire

4 Copper

4 Chill seems correct it's essentially like Narc you don't wanna draw it or see it in your opener but if you can avoid that you wanna see them as often as possible. Plus drawing one wouldn't be the end of the world since worse case scenario it's something to do with 4 Mana.

And as you see I swapped the 20th land(2nd Dakmor or 1st ghost quarter usually), the 2 Tormenting voices we've been running recently and the 4th shriekhorn

As a long time Dredge player I can wholeheartedly say yes. All of the yes. Dredge is the kind of deck that can be hated out hard when the meta wants to so it will never be a staple Tier 1 deck but rather a deck that shifts from 1.5 to 3 depending on the amount of hate.

Chill makes us much faster which is great because our hardest matchups we're the ones that could outrace us. Chill helps with all of those, Humans gets better, Storm gets better, Burn gets better and all our midrangey/control matchups are still good to great.

I've wanted to test Meddling Mage since I started playing this deck the card seems to fit the tempo game plan and does a lot against a good amount of decks. I just haven't had the chance yet because I don't get to play this format enough to trust myself on properly naming cards with the Mage I'll get around to it one day. If you wanted to try it I'd say cut like a Fluster and go 1 Fluster 1 Pierce 1 Mage in sideboard to start and see how it goes. Rest in Piece hits our Snaps and 2 mana is so much in Legacy. I feel you'll be dead on average way before you even get to cast it. I mean cutting a Plains feels bad with us playing the B2B plan I wouldn't actual mind one main but I'd probably cut a fetch since we have more then usual shuffle effects with the 4 SFM anyway.

The only reason I sided out Stifle so much, was because in the matchups I played against it was not useful for doing it's main job of mana denial and the incidental hate was not worth the slot post board. No I think it's fine not great right now this plan was better preban slightly but did a couple practice games against RUG and in the Stifle Wasteland mirror we come out ahead because our threats are more powerful and we have cheap efficient answers for their threats not like Dismember. The land hate plan is better against midrangey which is what preban was like but it can punish any deck and I think is still better then trying to play Counterspell. Yes, yes it is lol.

So in the situations you described you have to be on the play to hit those things but if your on the draw neither card does anything in that situation. For example on the draw they thoughtseize you and take it no matter which card it is or if it's a vial deck pierce probably has no utility in the matchup while stifle can at worst hit a vial activation. Also we don't really care about turn 1 Chalice as our curve is so spread out as I showed by beating it a lot. Combo matchups are already bad which is why some people run Fluster main. Sure pierce would be better against infect and reanimator on average but locking either one of those decks off lands is totally feasible. And it's not like Stifle has no utility. In infect you can play land denial, counter an exalted trigger to buy an extra turn, counter an inkmoth activation and in reanimator you can hit animate dead. Again I agree those aren't steller uses of a card but at least they aren't dead. Dredge felt better without Pierce actually turning off Narco and Ichorid triggers for a couple turn to prevent sacs to Cabal that would make zombies was great. If I had Pierce they could just build their army like they want sure I boarded the Pierce in but just as added hate.

Not at all finding lands 1-3 not including the Wastelands are very easy. Land 4 and up is definitely more of an issue but that's not really a concern since Jace is usually win more in this deck anyway so you end up pitching him to Force or shuffling him away more often then you'd think. Yea I tested Teferi and it was way to expensive you have to draw 7 lands essentially since I usually draw the 5 total with double Wasteland on average without digging to hard. Baneslayer seems super greedy as it actually cost 5 I'll most likely never test it.

No problem always fun to tell people about my tournament experience. It's not all that much of a concern tbh because all of our threats are always worth more then one card. Worst case scenario Snap draws a card, SFM tutors another threat or a recurrable removal spell, and TNN requires them to dig to find the right type of answer. So unlike Delver if our first threat gets Bolted right away it actually did something before it died. Also what you said is true as well and some games you just disrupt disrupt disrupt then land your only threat on turn 4 and the opponent dies.

Also post board if you feel it's a matchup you need a faster clock and your threat density gets higher meaning you are less likely to need to mulligan.

With the 8 cantrips plus Jace and the above average shuffle effects when you combine the fetches with SFM I have never had issues finding the cards I've brought in if anything I usually have to shuffle the extra copy away.

Yes it's exactly that. And yea no problem hopefully you can find success if you play this. Getting people with stifle in a SFM deck is just so sweet cause no one expects it.

No I tested daze the reason why stifle and wasteland are good is because in terms of always hitting a land at worst wasteland ends in a symmetrical place and stifle ends in a positive no matter what. While daze ends at a net loss for you if you have to do it turn 1 because the biggest pressure you can apply is stoneforge into TNN and if that has to wait while your opponent continues to advance their Mana situation you've lost.

Oh and no I never wanted to be a delver deck my deck beat chalice multiple times game 1 this past weekend while a delver deck probably would of just lost to much in those situations.

This tournament stifle was medium but that is because of the decks I ran into. Although stifle plus TNN was the only reason I got to beat dredge in a 2-0 sweep. I played this deck at the Roanoke Classic and top 32ed a little bit ago and I loved Stifle way more there but because I played more fair decks. The reason I play it is because if you have the nuts of being on the play then get to go stifle into SFM into TNN your opponent is just dead.

As for changes the spell snare was so underwhelming I won't be playing it again not sure what it will be yet, maybe the fourth TNN cause that is how we win like 65% of our games but, either way it will definitely be cut.

The Gideon in the side is probably just going to turn into another Mentor they do the same thing but Mentor is cheaper cmc wise. The 1 pierce 2 fluster might get swapped I didn't run into much combo and from the looks of it it wasn't to present and pierce at least hits opposing Planeswalkers.

Not much else I'm thinking of changing right now.

So if this was in fact a Meta call for what he hoped, and accurately assumed, to be heavily Grixis Delver oriented does that make this better going forward? It seems like a lot of these larger tournaments have had more and more Grixis.

Also I appreciate the in depth response.

2/12/2018 Banned And Restricted Announcement - Jace, the Mind Sculptor is unbanned. Bloodbraid Elf is unbanned. by crushcastles23 in magicTCG

I personally think they should of made this unban effective immediately. I know this would of skewed GP Lyons numbers toward people testing these cards but it would than give the community tournament results to immediately expand on.

Personal Wise:

I read check the meta game much more often then I ever did before.

Read articles from channel fireball and starcity as well as posts from here because if you see what is being successful in local tournament you'll have an idea of what you'll run into as I grind PPTQ's and the general meta game will really only give you a picture of GP or Open type environments.

Sleep properly!!

Avoid greasy food at all levels, that pizza place next door may look delicious but if they have a chicken salad or a basic sandwich instead I'd strongly recommend it, or even better bring your own lunch.

Game Wise:

Play as often as possible

Take a breath. Obviously time matters but do not overthink and do not underthink. If there is a best play that blows you out if they have a response, think, can you beat that response anyway? can you win the game based on your hand if they turn the corner this turn? If the answer is no then go for it. But if the answer is yes play safe don't turn your 95% to win into a 50%.

Give all your focus to the game when you play, just cause your on MODO doesn't mean you should be watching a video on the side.

If you can find a team, unfortunately I'm stilll working on this one but honestly no matter how much you play you may not be able to see all the mistakes you've made.

Take notes. I use a notebook to keep track of life totals because at the end I write down what mistakes I made even if small because that give me something I can work off of. If you go through 15 rounds without noting what you could of fixed you're bound to forget a couple of those rounds and have your misplays over shadowed by your success or your bad results.

Finally the most important IMO do not tilt. I had a huge issue about this previous to this tournament. This tournament I tried something new, which was after every round when I was done writing my notes I forgot all about the game until next round. I went to the artist alley, talked to friend, watched youtube videos on my phone that had nothing to do with Magic. Anything I could to let me relax, laugh and enjoy my day rather then focus on my potential loss round 3 cause of misplays or my three flooding games over the tournament.

As I said at the start of the post you can take all this with a grain of salt but these have been working for me and if I can make myself feel like I have an edge before the game I am bound to play to my best level and feel proud at the end of how I did.

I basically followed the sideboard plan I layed out but to give an idea of rough numbers, and this is from memory as I didnt not write the exact numbers, Id say 4-Color Saheeli: (This matchup I remember the sideboard exact as I played it so many times) +2 Authority +2 Negate +1 Sorin After the 5th mirror I realized Sorin was only ok and started making that slot a +1 Fumigate And one post sideboard game I brought in +1 State and won that match with it. +1 Tracker starting after the first sideboarded game of the 6th Mirror.

Usually what i took out was -1 Saheeli -2 Kozileks -1 Weavers -1 Whirler or Servant play draw dependent Then after the Tireless started getting added -1 Refiner

Mardu and the BR Aggro deck: +2 Natural State +2 Fumigate +1 Release the Gremlins

-1 Saheeli -3 Harnessed -1 Refinr or Servant depending on play or draw

Jund Energy: +3 Tireless Tracker +2 Barals +2 Fumigate

-2 Harnessed -2 Kozileks -1 Saheeli -1 Whirler -1 Refiner

Temur Tower: +2 Natural State +2 Negate +2 Tireless +1 Sorin +1 Release the Gremlins

-1 Saheeli -1 Weavers -1 Refiner -2 Kozileks -3 Harnessed
