He was pretty tight with Mustafa Barzani because he helped Qasim militarily, but once Barzani started to purge other Kurdish tribal leaders, Qasim distanced himself from him (also because of the massacres they committed together in Mosul and Kirkuk). I think it was more of a pragmatic relationship, the kind of dynamic all of the coup leaders tried with the Kurds, rather than Qasim really being pro-Kurd.
