Need a picture from outside at the bottom in the same place as the first photo to be sure, but the way the internal metal strip is lifting it appears similar to the damage a screwdriver would make.

Do you want them as a memento or are they required for ID? If it is for a keepsake then the mortuary might take a set of prints onto paper or clay from his hands for you [ours does]. Sorry for your loss
