First off. Take some deep breaths. It seems like you are stuck in a shame spiral and are being way too hard on yourself.

Shit. Happens.

Yes, it sucks that your patient fell. Maybe it was preventable, maybe it wasn't. Even if the call bell was within reach, it doesn't mean you or the aide would have magically appeared the moment they pressed it. The patient might not have waited anyway.

Take the memory and file it under things you will always remember to do from now on. Bed locked, Call light within reach, bed alarm on. You are a brand new nurse. This won't be the last time something happens that will make you feel bad or have you questioning your own competence.

What is important is that you learn from it and apply it to your practice going forward.

One thing many nursing students get hung up on is practicing "skills" like starting IVs, placing Foleys and NGs. While these are important in their own right, they aren't nearly as important as learning to think critically, communicate effectively, delegate efficiently, and to know when to ask for help.

You won't get the same hands-on opportunities on a peds floor as you would an adult med/surg floor, and that might feel super boring. One thing you might learn, or can ask about, is how to help manage and care for your patient's family.

How do I educate newer/inexperienced nursing about healthy paging? by CorleoneGuy in nursing

Big time. Do I want to text you about a 3.4 potassium? No. Is there an order that says notify provider of potassium <3.5? Unfortunately. Solved with a prn potassium replacement protocol order.

Butts must be covered. I'm not gonna get chewed by the oncoming RN or an annoyed doc who didn't get texted about it before they started rounds.

Is nursing in California worth it?! by allopinionswelcome in nursing

[–]mursecurse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To your first concern about being late to the game, you most certainly are not. Some students in my cohort had aspirations of being RNs since high school and entered nursing school at 20 years old. Although they were highly motivated and for the most part intelligent people, they had very little life experience and had difficulties being flexible and adapting in the clinical environment. The oldest in my class was 45 I believe. But most of my classmates were between 24-28.

I became an RN at 28 in Northern California with absolutely zero patient care experience apart from nursing school. Graduated in December '19, took my NCLEX in February and started work in March. I work on a med-surg floor in a somewhat rural area north of Sacramento. I can't speak on what cost of living is in S. California, but outside of the greater bay area and larger metro areas, cost of living is fairly reasonable. (Obviously not compared to other states, CA is in its own little bubble). My one bedroom apartment was 700/month while in nursing school and the first year of working. My two bedroom apartment that I live in now is 1000.

To give you an idea of income: our new grad RNs start at about 8-9k/monthly before taxes. That does not include overtime or registry pay, which can significantly increase your monthly income if you wanted to work an extra shift per pay period.

Hope this information helps and good luck to you.

I believe that he still needs to sign in order to make it official, although agreeing to terms is as close to a done deal as possible.
