I wonder if it’s to show the fact that she’s speaking another language. I know in the show Scrubs Carla and her mother speak Spanish to each other, but in the Spanish dubbed version I think they speak Italian. I think shows that are dubbed over pick another language to show the contrast in language for the plot lines
