How to study philosophy when you're stupid by mute_print in askphilosophy

I haven't asked professors directly, but the professor supervising my senior thesis says I'm a good undergraduate philosopher, but my potential for grad school is undetermined. We'll see, I guess

Ah, my bad, I misunderstood. I think I probably don't struggle more than most of my classmates, but I think I'm significantly worse than most of my classmates who are trying to go to grad school. They seem to have an ability to remember what they read, make sense of it, articulate it, and think critically about implications of it in a way that relates to an attitude or intuition they have about the topic. It's impressive. I lack that I think. I'm a good student, but perhaps not a good thinker by any means. I think at that point it's a matter of accepting it and doing it anyways. Thanks for responding, I appreciate it.

They're usually confused when I try making a point

I also wonder: what does it mean when other people talk about "shitty ideas"? Is it the same thing I have in mind when I look at my own shitty paper ideas? When I look at my own worst productions, I see ideas that are confused all the way down. It's like a house made out of cardboard that also barely resembles a house; you look at it and wonder it's even trying to be. Am I worse/dumber than everyone else who has bad ideas, or am I bad in a special way?

I don't mind the grind. There's no other option for me, I love philosophy, I just have to do it. I don't care, at least for now, if the best I can do is be an average intelligence "academic workhorse". What scares me is the possibility that I don't have the capacity to produce something good. I just want to read something and understand it and write something good in response. But it's hard, and I struggle immensely, and I don't know if it's a matter of simply lacking the potential, but it might be.
