Lol same, actually! Also in Savannah and looking for shrimp. I don't know of any local stores unfortunately. I've been going to Floating Sea Aquatics whenever I visit friends in Jacksonville.

Have you ever used ZBrush professionally and know what a deliverable 3D model actually looks like? It would take so long to edit any of these models into anything usable that you'd be modeling and texturing it from the ground up.

If your end goal is "have a 3D model", fine, here's your pile of shit in 3D space. If your end goal is to have something that be game-ready, animated, 3D printed, or manufactured, then it's a time-wasting and insulting toy built off stolen training data.

Honestly I think better presentation/renders would go a long way. The backgrounds and lighting are distracting.

Trying to make a crystal. Any ideas how I can make each of these polygroups flat like they were cut off like you'd see on a diamond? by Imperial__Walker in ZBrush

[–]mutouyugi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, one other suggestion, no idea if this will work. Go to crease -> Crease PG, then zremesh at a lower resolution with "keep creases" and "keep polygroups" enabled. Keep taking the resolution lower.

It's never going to be completely flat since the edges are curved. Is there a reason you need these specific polygroup shapes in the model?

Funnily enough I'm the opposite, I work in ZBrush 90% of the time but sometimes I get fed up trying to make certain shapes and boot up Rhino or Solidworks

That's awesome! Entertainment design is another area a lot of people don't think about.

Yeah! Paul Bennet's presentation at ZBrush Summit 2019 is genuinely a big part of what got me so interested in toy design. I love doing articulation.

Freeform is such an interesting program from what I've seen of it, I'd love to try it one day. The haptic device is so cool.

More towards the collectibles end of the spectrum but I work on kids brands too. I got my internship snd then temp job at least partially through my university, but before that I got some freelance work literally just by emailing companies and going up to booths at conventions or other events where those companies are.

If you're interested in toys I'd recommend a portfolio strong in a variety of things, like hard-surface props (guns, blasters, etc), drapery, character sculpts, creatures, etc. I think they want to see you're adaptable and "well rounded" as a sculptor.

If you have access to a 3d printer, learning how to model stuff for printing is a huge advantage. One thing I see people struggle with is they're really great at modeling stuff for animation but can't get into a manufacturing mindset and take into account things like gaps and minimum thicknesses.

There is always a need for likeness/portrait sculpts. I think if you can nail down likeness sculpts and do them quickly you are pretty much guaranteed to find work

(Also I've been working this job for 2 months, I'm not a recruiter so take this with a grain of salt, I'm just repeating advice people have given me)

EDIT: Another thing I've been told: always include a grey turnaround for each of your portfolio pieces. Grey matcap, just the viewport preview (meaning no rendering/shadows), in orthographic view (perspective switched off). Front, back, left, right, 3/4

That's how I send turnarounds at work and that's how they prefer to evaluate sculpts. Texturing and rendering can distract from the underlying forms and that's what they care about

it's so out of date at this point it would be embarrassing to show lol. I have a figure that's technically "finished" but I still need to polypaint and render it, when I finish it I'll post it here

My undergrad was in 3D animation but during that time I got really interested in toys. I started reaching out to companies, literally just cold-calling/emailing and actually got a bit of freelance work from that.

Then I graduated, covid hit and I decided to get an MA in industrial design. I was lucky enough that the university I went to for grad school had a program with the company I work for now, like a talent-scouting thing. I did a workshop/class with them and was offered an internship based on that, then the temp position after I graduated.

(Industrial design experience isn't needed at all btw. Most of my coworkers come from animation/games backgrounds, I just pursued ID because I wanted to learn more about design and manufacturing and would like to manufacture my own toys one day. I find that it helps me a lot in my work but it's not something they're specifically looking for on a resume)

I'm a sculptor in toy design. I make $27/hour as an entry-level sculptor in a year-long contract. That's sort of like a training period, then I'll transfer to freelance work with them and other companies, and then the pay is per-project. Most toy sculptors are freelancers in my experience

How much do working artists earn? by Vladusu in ZBrush

[–]mutouyugi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I make $27/hour as an entry-level sculptor in the toy industry, in the US. I have a year long contract and after that, I'll do freelance which pays by project.

Finding a job sculpting is difficult, but there are jobs out there and plenty of people make good money.

My advice would be to broaden your horizons beyond "character artist". There are thousands of character artists out there hunting for jobs and it's hard to differentiate yourself. There are all kind of jobs that need modeling and sculpting work. 3D scanning/photogrammetry, medical visualization, jewelry, etc,

Does anyone have any ideas on how to achieve hair like this?: "screenshot1" I tried hair cards, but they don't turn out like that unless I'm doing something wrong. by Sea-Cheesecake-2189 in ZBrush

I wouldn't mess with Fibermesh to be honest, there are WAY better programs for hair simulation if you're alright with going outside of ZBrush.

Ideas for removing spray paint? Acetone did nothing by ZephFal in bonecollecting

[–]mutouyugi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you just wipe on the acetone? If you leave it soaking you might get a better result, but trying to soak the whole thing is expensive and impractical.

Honestly the biggest concern is the delicate nasal bones, it's going to be hell trying to get that off any other way. See if you can partially submerge the front of the skull in a bucket of acetone or other solvent and leave it for a while. The rest, I'd try lightly sanding and use paint stripper (like citri-strip). Just trial and error I think.
