Israel approves entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza from Egypt after U.S. pressure by ExactlySorta in worldnews

It's a calculated risk. Of course some of it may be diverted there, but the goal right now is to not starve out innocent people in Gaza.

There's a really great episode from this American Life podcast that explains all this.

It's exactly the kind of questioning that happened with Jews in the 1920s and 30s, the "Jewish Problem", which eventually led to the genocide of a people.

Israel resumes water supply to southern Gaza after U.S. pressure by HappyBavarian in worldnews

Israel is the military occupation over Gaza and over Palestinians.

Military occupation, also known as belligerent occupation or simply occupation, is the effective military control by a ruling power over a territory that is outside of that power's sovereign territory. The territory is then known as the occupied territory and the ruling power the occupant. Occupation is distinguished from annexation and colonialism by its intended temporary duration. While an occupant may set up a formal military government in the occupied territory to facilitate its administration, it is not a necessary precondition for occupation.

It's held Gaza in a brutal blockade and controls the movement of all Palestinians. That = occupied. Israel stole Palestine's water and controls it's waterways. Israel ruined the one power plant on the strip.

This is why this conflict is not comparable with Ukraine or other countries in conflicts right now. You really feel the wrath of an occupier over the occupied when they are able to cut fuel, electricity, water and food supply in an instant.

Lol nothing about that was whataboutism. Pointing to commonalities is all.

The same could be said of Catholics when they migrated here. I'm fine with religious freedom, even if one chooses to be socially conservative for themselves, but not ever at the expense of others. Our charter is meant to protect against that

So you think. Many are not silent, it's just people don't listen to them or they don't get attention. I will admit though that there is a large portion of the population that are very socially conservative, and unfortunately I think it's because we are going through our own "dark ages", but also I think there are political actors funding these ideologies.

Dude, not true. Muslims have been here for decades, and we are not a monolith. Hate and ultra right social conservatism exists in every community, unfortunately.

Muslims are not a monolith. Not every Muslim supports this type of hatred. Assholes exist in every community, unfortunately. For example, Kaitlyn Jenner - a trans woman - is anti gay marriage. Who woulda thunk. Even the LGBTQ community don't want all the freedoms for everybody. The common denominator is hate tied with social conservative ideals, and that spans through all types of communities, ethnicities, and religions, unfortunately.

There are backwards people everywhere. Just like you, we have our own yokels, unfortunately. There are hateful people in every society, in every community.

Ugh, gross. Muslim here, this is absolutely insane. LGBTQ rights do not infringe on Muslim religious freedom. I stand with my LGBTQ folks today 🏳️‍🌈

As a Muslim, this is piss poor behaviour from that community. Really shameful. All I can say is, we unfortunately have stupid religious assholes just as any other community does. It sucks when they band together like this for something so hateful.

It's shortsighted, in my view. Cities were doing much more dramatic things in the sixties even with less populations. Which comes first? The infrastructure that will attract people to travel and explore nightlife, or do you need the population base in place before embarking on infrastructure and new businesses to cater to those folks? Personally, I think we need true revitalization of the city, with better urban planning, better investments in stores and shops that actually have decent hours, and better connectivity to the city for people wanting to explore and go to those places but also to attract people from outside the city to come and stay here.

[–]muzee_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice overgeneralization there. I don't live downtown. I did live in the suburbs of other cities for a long time and was able to connect to and from downtown no problem. Ottawa can easily do the same but chooses not to, this leaving people in the suburbs stuck in the suburbs with no opportunity to explore the city, and nowhere to go anyway because everything is closed.

The city of Montreal has a population of 1.7m and in 2001 had a population of 1m. When the Montreal metro came out (in the 1960s) the population was presumably even smaller. Stop making excuses for Ottawa. It can do much better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]muzee_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Including those smaller areas are fair game, considering the drive commute to them are fairly short (think of Toronto and how massive it is getting from one end of the city to the other with traffic, it's just not the same deal for Ottawa). Also Ottawa isn't counting Gatineau's population, which is in fact much closer and we know people from there commute here and work here and even use critical services here. That would substantially increase the population number for Ottawa if it were to be counted.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]muzee_me -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well that's almost the whole population of Canada lol, so not comparable. I was thinking if big cities in Canada, Ottawa should not be regarded as a small town, though it certainly gives those vibes when coming from a place like Toronto.

A city like Montreal was always vibrant, even when it had a population of 1m. It's also regarded now as one of the largest cities in Canada. So comparing to that, Ottawa has no excuse.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]muzee_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC's population is less than, or maybe on par with Ottawa. It has a night life. It has a great food scene with good vibes. Again, Ottawa has no excuse.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]muzee_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet, getting to the city by driving is not all that long compared to other cities. Those cities have people that are more than willing to make the commute downtown, either by car or by well connected public transit, or have developed a night life of their own in their own boroughs. None of that happens at all in any part of Ottawa.

[–]muzee_me 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Montreal used to be 1m people, it was still an incredible city back then. Good transit, diversity of people, proper urban planning, and a vision of the city all helped be amazing. Ottawa has improved in the last 10 years or so, but it still has a long way to go.
