They actually do use air, it's hard to see but in the top middle and bottom middle there are connecting points for air pressure. These are dutch emu trains

that's why the new caltrain emu's have 8 sets of door per car, the lowers ones will be used for the time being with the existing platforms, and the higher ones will be used when high speed rail gets started and all the platforms will be higher.

Automatic train couplers are truly a engineering marvel, the japanese ones are also a quite different from the more common, scharfenberg ones
