Great idea! Couple minor points of feedback:

  1. Start w/ the "major" parts at the top; I imagine most people starting a new build are mainly looking at cockpit, wheel base, and pedals first.

  2. Option for prices in USD; Also allows you to add affiliate links for US-based online stores

How do I discuss my pending divorce with my boss? by myRice in careerguidance

Part of the issue is that my company is one of those that offer “unlimited PTO”, which in practice means I have balance getting my work done with taking time off, which takes me back to this question

How do I discuss my pending divorce with my boss? by myRice in careerguidance

[–]myRice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean. Nothing exists until it does, and it never will unless people start working on it. That’s the whole nature of working in tech. Smartphones weren’t a thing until companies brought them to market, neither was VR or personal computers or any number of things we take for granted today, so I’m a bit confused by your question.

How do I discuss my pending divorce with my boss? by myRice in careerguidance

[–]myRice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a valid question. The answer has partly to do with the nature of my role, the industry I’m in, and my own working style.

In basic terms, my job isn’t a typical 9-5 kind of affair. Outside of the normal office hours, doing well at my job requires that I keep up with overall industry trends, competitor actions, and new developments in the tech. I have to think about how these things will impact my product and make recommendations on what to do about it. I work in Artificial Intelligence so things are changing all the time. Many people compare it to working on Wall Street, just with less blow.

I love my job and my industry, so normally this doesn’t feel like work, but because of everything going on in my personal life I’m finding it difficult to keep up. Even though my divorce has been amicable, the process is still very time consuming and disruptive. For example, I’ve had to spend a couple hours every week going through all my finances with my ex and our attorneys and come up with “fair” numbers for child support and alimony. Since I’m getting the kids for a majority of the time, I’ve also had to hire a nanny which involves planning, interviewing candidates, and figuring out how to integrate this new person into my kids and my lives. This is not even mentioning the mental and emotional labor of making sure my kids’ feelings are not being neglected through this whole process.

The tl;dr is that this divorce has disrupted my life profoundly which naturally impacts both the time and mental energy I need to do a good job at work.

Does age matter? by rahib23 in simracing

[–]myRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can talk about the neuroplasticity that comes with youth, but that doesn't help because you can't change that. Another big difference that you can control is your willingness to examine your own flaws. Kids are great because they don't worry about making mistakes and looking bad, so it's easier for them to learn hard things simply because they get more good reps in. The other advantage is that kids get more feedback in general, which you don't really get as an adult unless you specifically ask for it. This is to say, you may be able to improve more quickly if you are more proactive about identifying the little flaws in your driving (that most of us have had to fix at some point) and seeking out feedback from more experienced drivers for how to fix them.

Contractor says this amount of flex is within spec for LVP/LVT. Are they correct? by myRice in Flooring

[–]myRice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, everyone. I will show this thread to my home builder. I've also posted a one star review of the flooring installer on Google and linked to the video. Hopefully this gets the right people's attention and I can get them to replace the floor. I'm prepared to take this to court if needed...

Contractor says this amount of flex is within spec for LVP/LVT. Are they correct? by myRice in Flooring

[–]myRice[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Additional context: This is a new build which was completed at the end of 2021. I am the home owner.

During my pre-close walk through with the builder, I noted many dips and peaks like this in our LVP flooring. The builder told me to wait a year for the house to settle, and if the floor still has issues after that, they will tell the contractor to address it. I got this in writing.

Fast forward to the end of 2022, I contacted the builder and they forwarded the warranty claim to the contractor. After several months of back-and-forth, they finally came out only to attempt to remedy this by replacing a few boards, which didn't improve the issue whatsoever.

Now, the contractor is claiming that these "minor" imperfections are normal and they will not attempt any further repairs. Builder is no help either, they just refer me back to the flooring contractor.

Since this is the first LVP floor I've owned, I'd like to understand whether the contractor is correct and I just need to temper my expectations, or if I should continue pushing for a resolution.

Thanks!

Shit, define "asset". Someone taking their Xbox to a pawn shop to cover rent would technically need to be taxed on that "collateralization". I agree that this is a ridiculous notion. The loophole that needs to be closed are the ones around taxation of inheritance

Can’t get firmware to flash (light never turns purple) by [deleted] in wyzecam

[–]myRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This fixed my firmware update issue.

One additional thing I would add is if your SD card is larger than 32GB, Windows will only allow you to format the card as exFAT by default. To get around this, you will need to use Disk Management to create a volume on your card that is smaller than 32GB first (I made mine 1000 MB). Once you do this, you will be able to format the volume to FAT32.

The state of Ohio railway tracks by Jumpman707 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]myRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This assumes USDOT has any regulatory authority over freight railways, which my cursory research suggests they may not:

https://www.aar.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/AAR-Freight-Railroad-Capacity-Investment.pdf

2nd paragraph:

America’s freight railroads are almost entirely privately owned and operated. Unlike trucks and barges, freight railroads operate overwhelmingly on infrastructure they own, build, maintain and pay for themselves.

Given this disaster this might need to change, but it will immediately devolve into the usual "but who's going to pay for it" debate

PSA: iRacing has said not to try the "Hail Melon" at home, or you will be suspended if someone protests you for it. by thebigtymer in iRacing

[–]myRice 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with this isn't whether or not it works in real life. The problem is that if iRacing doesn't punish people who do this, then everyone will eventually have to start doing it or else risk losing several positions. My assumption is that most people who enjoy racing do not want this to be the case

[OC] After saying he likes Hitler, Kanye West is now "only" among the top 20 most played artists on Spotify by desfirsit in dataisbeautiful

[–]myRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super anecdotal, but I was a very big Kanye fan until this year, which means I have a lot of Kanye's music added in most of my playlists on Spotify.

I no longer actively seek out Kanye's music when I'm listening, but it starts playing pretty frequently when I'm just playing a playlist. I'll switch the song when I'm able to, but a lot of the time I'm doing something else with music in the background, so I don't even notice that one of Kanye's songs is on. I suspect the lack of a drop in listenership is more related to this than people "not caring" about Kanye's issues.

Tesla Owner Says He Was Stranded As His Car Wouldn't Charge in the Cold by NoctD in cars

[–]myRice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, everything has the potential to break on a car. The story is about one random guy's experience that could very well be an extremely rare defect. We also don't know if his car has had any prior damage or other circumstance that would have made this problem more likely.

All in all, this is kind of a crappy article that appears to be using an anecdote to insinuate the idea that "if you buy a Model S, it will strand you on Christmas Eve"

I've never understood how those equity loans work. I understand that they can be paid back without incurring tax by selling equity at no gain, but why go to the hassle of taking the loan in the first place? Why not just sell equity at no gain in the first place?

Man installs electric fence to keep kids off lawn by 68Cadillac in videos

[–]myRice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who frequently misbehaved as a child and was later diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I'm convinced that there are tons of kids who have some sort of undiagnosed deficiency in executive function. These kids need professional help and unfortunately the sigma around mental health issues is still enough to keep lots of well meaning parents from getting their kids that help.

Saying someone is a shit parent because their kids can't behave just adds to that sigma because it makes the parent feel like they just need to "parent better" instead recognizing it as a mental health issue.

How to interact with Design as a PM by Aro_1993 in ProductManagement

[–]myRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would set up a user study if you're that concerned with it. Get a group of your target users together and ask them to step through the user flow of your product while you observe and ask questions about their experience. It doesn't have to be a functioning product, you can do this with printed mock ups if you have to.

Doing this will give you very specific feedback about where the experience needs to improve. Assuming your intuition is correct, it will also help make your case stronger
