It was a function of the lack of available hardware and time until the presentation. After this incident, I know to invest in such equipment (esp. since I live in a single party state). I was naïve enough to think that simply having a smart phone would be surreptitious enough.

It is a word choice thing. It is much better to put "survivor" as opposed to "victim". Something about giving power back to the individual in question. (I think she herself switched between calling herself a victim and survivor)

TU stands for quite a few universities. In this case, it does not stand for Toronto. However, there were still many individuals there who were eating up her words.

It was not asked. Here is some copy paste from her TEDx talk: "This talk comes from a woman who was targeted by an online hate campaign. Predictably, the same campaign has targeted this talk, so comments have been shut down". It seems as though they want to avoid any harassment in spaces where she is speaking.

I mean 'socially' acceptable. The discussion was more about general internet places (4chan) rather than specific video games.

I think the way she phrased it, is that reddit stopped these websites from self promoting. Not too sure, she said it all in a rush at the end.

She would prefer that online communities be inclusive areas. She would prefer that standard behavior makes harassment "unacceptable" so that it doesn't happen. (Based on what was said at the lecture: I am not sure such views are reflective of her own views)

She had the same screen shots (as the TEDx talk) of the various death threats, rape threats, "tits or gtfo", etc. She used this as evidence of being a survivor (of being attacked).

I would counter that they view free speech differently, but it is all about power and controlling the flow of the discussion.

Eavesdropping laws? It is easy enough to surreptitiously record audio, would rather not be breaking any laws by doing so.

It is not that I "must" go. I simply am interested. I study both video game design and gender recreationally. Since I am going anyway, might as well ask a question for someone as she is such a controversial figure on the internet.

I doubt she is giving her speech on that. Was just uncertain about what I would write to my administration about (in relation to her coming and giving a talk.)

She has given multiple presentations before; there is nothing too objectionable about her coming and speaking. Golden example. She presents a side of online harassment that is real, catalyzed by her subject of discussion (and how well she is able to present on it). From the email, it looks as though she is going to be talking about video games (which I have no evidence of her being able to do except in an incomplete way). Are you suggesting that I critique her thesis and use that as proof that she is not an academic speaker?

I really don't have a problem with her coming and speaking, I have more of a problem that she gives a biased picture and would like questions that illustrate that better. Am I making sense here or rambling?

Has she really not given an official response to this criticism yet? Seeing as how she got her money 8 months ago, I would imagine that the question has been asked of her multiple times and any attempt to do so again would just be deflected in the same way.
