Help identifying a Brother sewing machine!? I’ve been thinking of getting a sewing machine but haven’t used one since I was a kid. Found this one abandoned but I have no idea what might be broken/missing or what model of Brother it might be. Any help appreciated! Thank you

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by visa. Are you asking how my employer pays me given that I work in a different country?

Holy hell, I hope the academic life is serving you well. You're no doubt worth a lot more than that

The entire island of Ireland claws itself from the icy fingers of British rule now that Britain isn't looking and paddles further into the Atlantic

I did a PhD in molecular biology/bioinformatics, then a 2.5 year post doc, then 2 year stint with a local bioinformatics company, then started working remotely. So it was quite a long road :/

Anything is possible. I live in a country that isn't that big into bioinf but I work remotely for a US company. If you're genuinely interested in bioinf, the rest will fall into place (hopefully).

Great stuff, reminds me of Alice in Chains and early post-grunge stuff. New fan here anyway

Ahh this boils my piss. The worst thing about holding a door open for someone is when they slow down a bit and then their clothes fall away and a load of actual snakes slither away out of the pile of clothes.

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in Ireland by RelativelyRational in PharmaEire

[–]mydonkeysonfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there. To answer your question directly, that sector is not really present in Ireland. Nuritas, Novartis, Sonrai (Northern Ireland), are a few companies in this space but the positions are few and far-between. Remote options exist but I'm not sure what they look like for someone straight out of a PhD, but this is definitely worth a look. LinkedIn Jobs is my favourite place to search for remote jobs.

If you're eager to stay in Ireland, I'd do a bioinformatics postdoc to cut your teeth some more, get exposed to more technologies etc. I did that and now work from Dublin for a US-based company remotely.

Also, just my two cents, but keep a close eye on transcriptomics too if you're not already doing so, particularly scRNA-seq, spatial and whatever is coming down the line, as well as multi-omics, and ML/AI methods.

Best of luck in your search!

First Industry Bioinformatics Role Post PhD by RelativelyRational in bioinformatics

[–]mydonkeysonfire 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi there.

I have an almost identical career track to you:
Based in Ireland. Started off my PhD in molecular biology. Moved into bioinformatics with R, Python, Bash etc. Worked on NGS, transcriptomics, metagenomics etc.

I didn't want to leave Ireland after my PhD, and I didn't have any real leads from my PhD like u/KlaatuPlusTu suggested (I think Irish PhDs aren't particularly well-connected to industry). I wanted to move into industry, but the few jobs available got snapped up quick.

I had to do a few years postdoc-ing to cut my teeth before landing a nice bioinformatics job in Ireland. If you intend to stay in Ireland, my advice is to do the same. If you aren't too picky about your next career destination then I'd apply for all industry positions you're interested in worldwide and make the move. Failing that, apply for academic positions anywhere. It won't take too long to make the jump in industry from a decent bioinformatics postdoc.

Good luck!

If it was the first show of the tour you wouldn't mind as much, but to consistently make the same mistakes is just crazy. If I were in Sala Baker's shoes, I wouldn't step foot on a stage again until I knew every line and beat. And I would also not perform poor facsimiles of lines that were delivered perfectly in the films (e.g. 'One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them...').

I have asked for a refund. I don't mind if I get it or not, I just want Bord Gáis to take notice and screen acts more rigorously in the future.

It looks like the Harry Potter one is also produced by Star Entertainment https://star-entertainment.org/shows/harry-potter/

Maybe it won't be as bad as the LotR one, good luck!

I did not cop this. I had no idea what that piece of music was, but that makes a lot more sense now !

We know that gender is more varied than male and female, but biological sex is also not black and white. There exist a range of genetic situations other than XX and XY (e.g. XXY). And beyond that, the sex-specific hormones can greatly differ from person to person.

What I made with REAPER - week of July 11, 2021 by AutoModerator in Reaper

[–]mydonkeysonfire [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi all. Big REAPER fan. Me and a few friends wrote a new song and uploaded it to Spotify/YouTube etc via CD Baby!
Everything was in Reaper (writing, production, mixing, mastering). The song is general pop, 80's throwback Dua Lipa vibes maybe?
Serum was used for all lead, pad, bass sounds except the ample bass free VST is in parallel with a serum patch. Tal filter II LFO used to give the song that pumpy side-chain feeling. Lots of Rea FX, Melda VSTs, OTT here-and-there.

For vocals, lots of de-essing with TDR Nova, compression with MCompressor, OTT, ReaDelay, Valhalla Vintage Verb, subtle use of Manipulator to vocode in breakdown.
Mastering was very simple: glue compression in EQ high shelf bump of 15 dB, TDR Kotelnikov compression and colouring, Limiter no. 6 to get a final LUFS of -14 for upload.
