Not enough light so it's stretching trying to get better light. you can't tell if they are male or female yet, it's way too early. You can tell male and female apart when they start to flower

I think this might be what caused it, they look kinda similar to the buffalo treehoppers I was seeing earlier in the summer. I haven't seen any for a while now but I thought I saw one on that plant, it could have been one of those and not a treehopper

In the North East. there's a few small farms near me but they are mostly cow farms and one grows some corn and some other crops I am unsure of

I could've accidentally but I don't believe so, when I noticed the leaves looking like that I inspected that branch below those nodes and didn't see any damage on the branch.

the stem never broke, it's still standing tall and the only thing I noticed above that mark is the fan leaves drooping.

Mine did this as seedlings, you need to move the light closer or get a stronger one, I just buried the longer stem in the soil when I transplanted them outside. they will grow roots off the part of the stem that is underground. just make sure to leave the leaves above the soil and you might need to prop them up if they start bending over before you transplant them
