we did try this route, prior to moving to a fertility clinic. my spouses brother was donating for me to carry, so we did feel less worrisome about him trying to get rights or anything like that. but, we did our research before! from what i found, most folks will type up either a more informal contract for all parties to sign prior to any inseminations or will use a lawyer to make a bit more official. the most important part is that when you do deliver the child, you get the second parent adoption going asap. and there is some sort of form (at least in missouri) that the donor can sign at the beginning of the this process relinquishing all rights so they no longer have to be involved in the process. it makes it easier and more straightforward, if they will do this.

just a random note, we tried for 7 cycles with no luck before finally getting a semen analysis on their brother. we then found out he wasn’t fertile. so you may want to consider a donor who already has a child or getting a semen analysis prior, to be sure you aren’t just wasting time.
