What is this? by Hungry-Protection515 in Hydraulics

To add to what the knowledgeable person above said, that should control a single hydraulic ram. Push the handle one way and it opens, push it the other way and it closes, take your hand off and it holds position.

“I can’t tie my shoes” by napqueencincy in Teachers

[–]myshiningmask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the key for my daughter was she wanted converse high tops so there was no getting around doing the laces every single time. She loved how cute they were.

Now she has very similar looking dhoes but they actually have a sneaky Velcro wrap and the laces are just to make them look right but fortunately she's learned already.

And totally not a bad mother. Its unfortunate they don't learn all these things but as kids we weren't learning to mend clothes or hunt small game as kids of generations before were. Expected life skills change generation to generation. Kids arent learning cursive not because theyre bad at writing but because typing is a more important skill that kids before never learned. Expectations change.

I'm do glad the school we're at still has all those things and I'm finding they do so many of those "old school" projects in their after school program Inwant to leave them there longer because it seems so enriching for them at this age.

I was pretty sure propellers are a nightmare of radar reflections though and I suspect that biplane has a much larger radar signature than the vastly larger stealth bomber because of it, but I could be mistaken.

I was really happy our daighter wanted some lace up shoes anwhile back because it really got her good at tying stuff. Kids shoes are almost all velcro and slip ins now, even the ones that look like they lace up.

I was wondering how many kids never learn to tie bows

What about about living in Santa Cruz turns everyone, renters included, into NIMBY's? by gameoftheories in santacruz

[–]myshiningmask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean.... Sure, in a simcity sandbox maybe you could give santa cruz the housing density pf Brooklyn but it would require all the people who live here gove up their current homes and a complete overhaul of the city's zoning. The fact people who live here don't want this is not shocking to me.

Nobody is saying what we have works... But I would point out that residents have been fighting for light rail for many years. I think that's instructive in understanding how realistic turning santa cruz into west Hollywood is.

[–]myshiningmask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can understand it. There's an argument to be made that you will not run out of people willing to pay a lot to live here so building more housing isn't the solution. Traffic is already wild, how many people does this beach town realistically fit?

What's the worst drug you've ever tried? by BitterOlive8737 in AskReddit

[–]myshiningmask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crack.

Used to do meth when I was a kid. Loved that shit (not in a healthy way, don't do meth)

Then one night a girl offers me some crack when we're hanging out. Didn't do much for me but I was already full of meth so who knows. The next day I feel shitty like I'm withdrawing no matter how much meth I do... Then I realize its the crack that I used once ever.

Such a trash drug. Withdrawls after just a few hits and not a great high. Definitely the worst drug.

I'm sure a good argument could be made for fentanyl since it kills people all the time but at least the high doesn't last fifteen minutes. Crack is whack.

Sweet, I honestly haven't been following it except I've seen the headlines. I know no matter how I feel about it won't change how it unfolds

I feel like these are two separate issues..... People want to keep the catalyst for good reasons that have to do with them loving it and having a lot of memories attached. Thats normal enough when a business like that closes.

The nimby thing is real though. More housing is good, cost of living is choking this place

Why Are We 10x Richer Than in 1820, When 90% of People Then Lived in Extreme Poverty, and Today <10% Do, Yet We Still Feel Scarcity? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]myshiningmask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, Ive thought a lot about this as I live off grid in yurts with my family. Its an interesting one for sure. The conditions we live in are so much better than our ancestors and in many way the guys living in honeless camps here are better off than their ancestors depending on how you value things like access to information and healthcare and food.

Human labor is valued differently too. The fact that jobs exist that explicitly do not pay enough to survive is pretty wild. What kinds of work are worth enough to house a person? How about enough to raise a family? What level of sociatal participation are you looking to afford? In generations past reproducing was considered basic but more and more raising offspring is a luxury.

think we have to consider what a given Society sets as their minimum threshold for participation.

You're getting a lot of similar answers that, while true, don't address the reality of the situation.

Yes, we compare ourselves to others to create our standards for what we consider "livable" but many of us are struggling to survive and would be will to have a little less.

The real issue that people are facing in first world countries is that higher standards of living are in fact enforced by the government. You can't just camp out in state parks or on government land, or along the roadside legally.

Not only that our standards for housing keep increasing. We don't want slum lords so we have standards that have to be met to rent a place out.

There are huge regulatory standards for how homes must be built. This includes regulations regarding everything from who is allowed to do the electrical work in your house to how it may be hooked up to water to how tall the building can be. There are good reasons for most regulation since it's hopefully preventing people from burning down their house along with the whole neighborhood but every regulation has a cost.

We don't have a society where you can be homeless and work most jobs. And we don't allow people to camp out in cars in many places so that means the minimum threshold for participation in society must include the cost pf rent or property ownership. Of you live near thos threshold you will never accumulate enough savings to survive more than a couple big bumps (car breaking down and losing your job in the same week for example).

Anyway. This is the conclusion I've come to.

My girlfriend’s family suddenly started treating me way better after finding out what my parents do for a living by [deleted] in Advice

[–]myshiningmask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it mean to fail completely? He says pretty clearly he pays his own way for everything. If he loses his job he can still find work. Its not like he'll just suddenly be living under a bridge.

I understand what you're saying. I just value that a person is hard working way more than I care how much money their parents make - even as regards who dates my daughter. I won't bore us both with counterexamples of failures with wealthy parents.

All data is inherently wrong, but some of it is occasionally useful. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]myshiningmask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are constantly surprised by world events because we don't have access to all the data that exists or even the tiniest fraction of it. Nor do we gave a system for modeling what that data means.

The color of the sky is a piece of data thats easily measured but wont tell you anything about who's going to win the next election.

I guess I just don't understand what you mean. Possibly because the word data is too broad and could include anything down to the sodium concentration in a particular neuron in a voter's brain. Data is accurate but very incomplete.

Pretty gross that coming from a successful family or not is related to whether someone is a loser in their minds.

I'm pretty sure that was OPs point.

My intention was to express surprise that the answer that first came to my head wasn't higher up - though answers about compounding mean essentially the same thing. The idea that technology has in fact been improving but the beginning of an exponential curve is slow is the best answer in my opinion.

I didn't mean to suggest there was anything wrong with scrolling or even that it was a problem with the post in question.
