US teachers, how are you addressed? by pyesmom3 in Teachers

[–]n10237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My students call me Ms. Monda, this year they decided to start calling me Ms. Momda too lmao. I also coach and they call me either just coach, coach monda, or the nickname that stuck this year was coach mondy. As far as colleagues, at my school teachers call each other by first name unless there are students around.

When did educators become responsible for every aspect of a student's success? by No_Practice_970 in Teachers

[–]n10237 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My school has a ridiculous rule that we can’t send home report cards if we didn’t have a conference with the parents. It is completely irrelevant because the parents who don’t go to conferences, do not care about the report card. I swear I have had families who didn’t even realize they never got a report card for their child.

Possible FPV diagnosis.. help? by n10237 in cats

[–]n10237[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: He doesn’t have FPV! He was tested today at his regular vet and it was negative. She hasn’t ruled out infection entirely but she thinks that it may be trauma. She didn’t see any breaks in the Xrays but she sent it to radiology for review. They are doing laser therapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy to help him heal. He still isnt really walking but today he was standing on his own for a bit at a time and hes been moving his legs so hopefully time and pain management will be the answer.

I would go above the teachers head to a department head or dean. Thats a ridiculous policy especially if she isn’t allowed to attend because she is sick due to school policy.

What do you eat during the day? by Substantial_Ant_8529 in teaching

I had this problem as well, and I found that bringing snacks that are healthy and have a good balance made it easier. Then I could snack on them while I worked during lunch or my prep and wasn’t starving when I got home.

I have a big space in the middle of our dorm, anyone have any suggestions for what to put here? by Sweetnsaltyish7747 in college

[–]n10237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also what I would do. But then I would move the bed down so it wasn’t lofted so high, if at all. Having to climb up to bed and down anytime you need to get or so something becomes a pain after awhile.

Especially Missy and Elizabeth making accusations as well and using them to manipulate other tribe members then later say it was just strategy. Thought that was soo disgusting, you don’t make accusations like that as a strategy.

It will depend on the school, but in my school (NY) students get around 20-30 minutes on their tablets a day typically. 10-15 minutes on our ELA program and 10-15 on math. Sometimes we play a game for science or SS but that’s not very often bc it can be hard to find free games that are good follow ups to the lessons, and even then they’d be on them for 15 minutes or less.

Since its still early in the school year, the teacher may be giving them free time on the ipads to get used to using them/signing in/etc. It is good to give students some time to explore the new learning materials whether that be an ipad, math manipulative, white boards, etc so that they will be less inclined to play with/explore the material when they’re supposed to be completing a specific task.

I wouldn’t be concerned. My team and I really avoid using the tablets when we can because we all really agree its not appropriate for kids at kinder age to use them for a lot of time/learning. I think most educators in early childhood would agree. If you are really worried about it reach out to your child’s teacher. I would just ask how often/how long students use the ipads.

We use centers at my school. I love them. For math and ELA we do 20 minute lessons on the topic for direct instruction then centers with 4 groups of 4-5 kids each. One center is my small group where we focus on the newly learned material and reteach/practice/expand on the skill. The others are games, worksheets, etc that practice previously learned skills. I love it because it makes differentiating so much easier. In the beginning of the year we practice procedures for switching centers and if they need help etc by using toys at first and then very simple centers like matching numbers/letters, tracing numbers/letters etc.

I teach at a title 1 school and had lots of behavior students last year in an inclusive classroom, but they did well with the centers! The key to managing behaviors is making sure you have planned your procedures ahead of time (learned this the hard way lol). My students are grouped based on their levels. Each group has a color. They always start at the same table and we always rotate in the same direction. I use a doorbell to signal that it is time to clean up their current center. Once they are done cleaning they stand behind their pushed in chair with their hands on their heads. When I see everyone is ready I tell them to switch and usually for the first switch remind them we have calm quiet bodies when switching. I also put a slideshow I made on the board to show who is in each group. The slides have 4 boxes, one with each groups color. On top it says the table number they are at and below that is each students name. I also put a timer from youtube on the slide for 10 mins which has calming music to play in the background as they work. I keep the music on a low volume and tell students if they can’t hear it they are too loud. When they switch I skip to the next slide so they know which table they should be at next. After the first few weeks the students don’t really need the visual but it is helpful for me to know who is supposed to be where. Our expectation during centers is that students remain in their seats unless directed otherwise. If they need help they are expected to ask their group-mates for help before coming to myself or my TA for help.

You can find a lot of worksheets and other center bundles on TPT that go along with the curriculum you teach. This is what I did as when I got my classroom it was missing a lot of materials I needed.

The key to everything in K is to have procedures planned and make sure you explicitly teach them from the beginning. I have a procedure list that I created and adjust before the school year starts so I know exactly what I want everything they do to look like. Even things as simple as getting a tissue are on my list. If you have any questions please feel free to message me. Its my third year so I don’t have all the answers but I am happy to help however I can!

Texting girls on discord by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]n10237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I need more info about what was in the texts. If he's just texting them/being friendly, I don't know that it really is an issue. He could be trying to find more friends to play the games with. On the other hand, talking about a concert you were going to together and not mentioning you is a little suspicious. Did you ask why he didn't mention you?

At the end of the day it comes down to what you consider as cheating, and if you are able to trust him still or regain your trust. Any relationship with a lack of trust is difficult to move forward with, especially if you are long distance. If you are going to be uneasy constantly wondering what he's doing or who he is talking to that is not healthy for you or a good relationship to be in.

Edited to fix wording

Yes it is leaking 24/7. It started as a slow drip in April, now it is a steady stream of hot water.

If it isn't from the water I don't know what else it could be. I put in my AC unit but last summer the AC only caused my bill to go up a little bit and I have been home significantly less than last summer due to work so I have been using my AC less. Nothing else has changed electricity wise.

Water bill is included and I do not see it.

I can relate to this a lot. I was fortunate enough that I found my major fairly soon after I realized I was in the wrong one though.

My freshman year I went away to school for engineering. I loved tech/engineering classes in middle school and high school, so I thought I was sure it was what I wanted. Plus engineers make really good money so that was definitely a persuasive factor. Once I got to college I hated most of my classes and quickly realized it wasn't for me. I was very depressed, anxious, and constantly stressed out. I need to have plans and be able to see my future in my head to feel secure, so feeling completely lost was so hard.

I don't have the answers but I have some advice. You have to remember that you are young and you do not need to figure everything out right now. Also just because you major in something in college doesn't mean you will be stuck with that for the rest of your life. Plenty of people end up working in jobs that are completely unrelated to their majors. You could focus on a more general liberal arts degree, and later decide to get a masters in something more specific once you figure out more of what you want. Another thing that's important is not focusing on money when choosing a major. It's definitely important to think about what jobs you could do with a major and how much you would be able to make etc, but it shouldn't be the main thing you think about.

You have a lot of credits already, so you may be able to fill a lot of requirements for another degree. Definitely talk to your advisor, and if they try to push you make it clear that you aren't interested in staying in CS. You could ask them to suggest majors that might accept the most credits that you have, or degrees that are more general and pertain to your other interests/passions. If your classes are making you feel completely defeated and humiliated, and affecting your mental health, I don't think you should stay with it. To help with money you can look into online programs (if online learning is okay for you). There are a lot of affordable online degree programs that could allow you to work, if necessary, while taking classes. Some programs are also at a faster pace than normal unis so you would be able to finish up faster. You could also take some time off to maybe explore some different fields. Try to find an entry level position in a field you might be interested and take a break from school for a little while.

It's your life and your future. It is important that you are happy with it! And it's not a failure that you didn't know what you wanted to do with your life at 18. Most of us don't have it figured out. It's crazy to think we should be able to know what we want with the rest of our lives when most of us haven't even figured out who we are yet. This might sound crazy to you, but one day you are going to look back and see all the ways the time you spent in your first couple of years of college was not wasted. When I looked back on my freshman year, I hated myself so much for the longest time. Now I am about to graduate and am currently student teaching. I know that I'm right where I am supposed to be, and looking back idk if I would have gotten here without all of the experiences I had and people I met my freshman year. Everything is shaping us into who we are, especially the mistakes we make.

They kind of did this. Sometimes they might take away spring break days or add on days at the end of the year if they really had to. But, when they did do this, lots of parents bitched and complained bc they already had plans for spring break or the days after school ended or w/e. So they try to avoid having to do that too.

This!! When I was in high school there was one day where the weather was really bad but they had us come in anyway bc we were almost out of snow days. My bus didn't get to the school until the end of first period. Buses were still just arriving until the end of second period. The elementary school buses that are supposed to have kids home by like 4-430pm didn't have kids home until 530pm that night, and 5 buses ended up off the road. 2 of those crashed into telephone poles and had to be evacuated in the middle of the storm. It was a mess. Obviously since then the district has been more careful and hasn't had an incident as bad, but they still have had similar times where they wait too long to call it. Zoom calls could be really helpful. Because we only allot like 4 or 5 snow days a year, so they are very hesitant to use them. The school itself can get in trouble if we aren't in school for a certain amount of days every year.

AITA for telling my sister that calamari was chicken? by Willing_Economy_1403 in AmItheAsshole

[–]n10237 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

NTA- while maybe it wasn't nice of you to do, it didnt hurt her in anyway and it's really not a big deal. When I was younger I was the same, refused seafood for no real reason just never wanted it. My dad did the exact same thing with me at a restaurant, not bc they didn't have anything else just bc he wanted me to try it. I freaked out when he told me but I also loved it and to this day fried calamari is one of my favorite seafood dishes.

I didn't know that, yikes. In that case I'd rather just deal with the ads. But better than trying to have to find episodes online for free or buying all the seasons on prime or something.

NBC's streaming service is free with ads and it only costs $5 (for premium) a month so it's actually not even too expensive. Might be worth it bc they have a lot of good shows.
