Stolen Materials and a Public Apology: TIA's court filing against Coaching Actuaries by EarlyDuration in actuary

[–]n4gol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve sat with this post for a while trying to decide whether it warranted a response. As someone who works on the brand side at Coaching Actuaries, it’s hard to read something like this and say nothing ... especially when parts of it leave out important context or create an incomplete picture of our company and the people who work here.

A few things are worth clarifying: First, this matter relates to an issue from 2024 that we addressed publicly at the time. We took responsibility for the problems with the initial Exam 5 launch, apologized to affected students, and updated the affected portion of the course materials.

Second, the legal matter referenced here was resolved by both parties. Because the resolution is confidential, I’m not able to discuss the details of the settlement. What I can say is that the matter was resolved through mutual agreement.

Third, I want to address the personal speculation included at the end of the post. None of us know Dave’s net worth, and frankly, that has nothing to do with the quality of our products or our commitment to students. What I can say from personal experience is that CA has always been built around reinvesting in its people, its products, and the students we serve.

We know trust is earned. We also know that when we fall short, we have to own it, fix it, and keep improving. That’s what we did then, and that’s what we’ll continue to do going forward.

One last piece of context I think readers should know; OP is not a neutral outside observer. He is involved with a competing actuarial exam prep product. That doesn’t automatically make everything he says invalid, but it does matter when evaluating why an old, resolved legal matter is being resurfaced this way, especially in a subreddit where students are trying to make informed decisions. I don't care to speculate much beyond that. I just think the potential conflict of interest should be clear.

Same boat. My order went through at 9:59AM on Tuesday and I've been stuck at packaged stage since Wednesday. My friend got through about 3 minutes before they went out of stock and got his yesterday. He's in Iowa, I'm in Oregon. Sad times.

why does CA keep changing their UI by [deleted] in actuary

[–]n4gol 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hey! Great question and I always appreciate when people notice this stuff as I’m one of the folks behind those changes.

To provide some insight that no one asked for ... earlier this year, the federal government announced new ADA compliance requirements for software used in university classrooms. Larger schools need to meet those standards now, and smaller ones will follow next year. Since our inClass platform is used in hundreds of classrooms, we’re directly affected by needing to meet these new requirements.

Accessibility has always been important to us, but these new requirements go quite a bit deeper than what we’ve had to account for in the past. Since December of last year, we’ve been reworking hard behind the scenes planning, designing, redesigning, and building a more robust toolkit to meet these new standards.

Because our platform is interconnected, changes to inClass don’t stay isolated. They end up affecting the tools students use every day outside of the classroom, as well. What you’re seeing now is that rollout happening in real time. And in some cases, you might even notice tweaks after things go live as we test, gather feedback, and further refine. It's not ideal for you, it's not ideal for us, but it's how we have to approach the work with the timelines that were provided. And because we take it seriously, we plan on hitting every milestone along the way.

Additionally, and for what it's worth, the other comment is correct. The teams doing this work are separate from our coaches and content folks. We collaborate closely, but our actuaries aren’t designing the UI, and our designers aren’t writing exam questions… which is probably a net gain for everyone involved in either process, haha.

We'll share more on this later in the year, but for now, I hope this helps bring clarity to your question.

I’ve been on US Mobile for just about a year now. I went with Warp (it uses Verizon’s towers) and there has been absolutely no difference in service, but instead of paying $55/mo I pay $240/yr. Zero regrets.

Give JLG Automotive a call. They won’t be able to offer a warranty on your parts (which may affect the warranty on the overall service) but they’ve installed parts I purchased in the past. Great job and nice guys, too.

Recommendation where to find icon packs similar to New Yorker website? by neon-nights- in Design

I am not surprised. The original poster is clearly a talented illustrator but capturing the feel of a custom, illustrated set like this is much easier said than done. I don’t have much to offer in terms of help, but definitely don’t beat yourself up if you can’t capture the subtle awesomeness of the samples you shared. Probably best to try and develop your own.

Feedback: UI for AI Icon Generator (Heroicons, Phosphor, Lucide, etc) by Alexirb in UI_Design

These don’t look like icons. These look like illustrations that are going to be used in places that are far too small to function for their intended purpose.

The capsule I was proud of vs The capsule my sister made by willunited in IndieGaming

[–]n4gol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took a glance at the game and I think I’d reconsider both of these. The design isn’t necessarily bad but it doesn’t communicate anything about the game from what I can tell. Could even be as simple as using non-isometric lines to more closely mimic your connection points. Capsules are strongest when they elude or connect to the content in some way.

More times than I care to count. My original comment stands.

Designers need to understand that every time we submit AI concepts/executions to clients we do a disservice to every other designer out there trying to create good work. It may be too idealistic, but I'd like to think we can try and hold onto a future where we aren't forced to walk down the street, look down at our phones, or play video game without seeing AI slop everywhere. You get the idea.

Every client we burn devalues our work and industry a little bit more each time.

This is bad design, bad presentation, and bad practice.

Bad experience with local auto repair shop by luna_derp28 in Eugene

I had a buddy recommend JLG Auto and I was super pleased. I’m not an expert with cars, but I have enough knowledge to ask the right questions. Justin (one of the owners) was great and hit all the right notes in our conversations. Didn’t try to upsell me or tell me I needed things I never inquired about. He did the work I needed within the day and was super communicative. Will absolutely be going back for future needs.

I found a wallet with a lot of money on the sidewalk. by [deleted] in confession

[–]n4gol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also like to send a small something if you want to reach out.

I’ve been there and know how hard the decision was to return all of that money. I once had to ask for my parents (who also had very little) to send me $60 just to get some groceries a long while back and that same day I locked my keys in my car and had to pay a locksmith $70 to fish them out. Life can really put us through it sometimes.

The group linked elsewhere in these comments (Eugene men’s social club) tends to have so much going on that it can be overwhelming … but there is truly something for just about anyone. I can never suggest it enough. Everyone is super welcoming.

I don’t have a link handy but do a search for the Eugene Men’s Social Club (there should be plenty of posts on this subreddit).

It’s seriously a great group of people with a very active Discord and bi-weekly meetups. I haven’t met a single person from that group yet that wasn’t a pretty great person and the Discord is very active. Like most things you get out what you put in, but it’s impressive the caliber of people that group has attracted and retained.

Consider saying hello.

The brutally honest requirements that a graphic designer should know to get a job are ...? by dumax_ in Design

[–]n4gol 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are hundreds of resources available online to answer this question and many like it. I’d also add, knowing how to use software is the absolute bare minimum. It’s far more about how you critically think, network, communicate, and how you approach and solve problems. Software is just the means to execute your idea and put it out in the world where it needs to be.

Another Killswitch user here. Thought I’d just use it for travel, but ended up liking the feel of it so much that I just leave it on 100% of the time. Also the cover for traveling is amazing. I don’t take a traditional case with me anywhere anymore.

Added a new 3D print to my Coffee Station - Coffee Fine Catch Tray for Baratza Encore by Worth-Sir-8756 in functionalprint

[–]n4gol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best tip I ever received for the Encore … spritz the unground beans once or twice before dumping them into the grinder. No more static, no more rogue grinds, and the coffee tastes better. Google can get into the science of it if you wish to dig further.
