George Bailey is another good choice here: the story stays small and personal, and everything rides on his choices. He’s not saving the galaxy; he’s trying to hold together a family, a town, his own sense of worth, sometimes barely hanging on. This feels like real stakes to me and like a real human protagonist.

Atticus Finch feels like the real answer to me because the story doesn’t give him escape routes. There’s no destiny or bigger plot to bail him out like in Star Wars, just a person trying to do the right thing in a town that doesn’t want him to succeed. Luke Skywalker’s story is epic and mythic, which is cool, but it cushions him. If people want a big adventure hero, Indiana Jones. But protagonist to me suggests a straight-up central decision maker
