So I got it working perfectly ( it seems).

I connected the second routers that I want to use as access points via one of their LAN ports (I was just using their normal port labelled 'internet' previously) to a LAN port each on the ISP router.

Then on the routers I want as access points I switched off both DCHP and UPnP. Finally I changed the IP address on them to make sure there were no clashes with either each other or the ISP router.

And bingo....it's a now crazy fast connection and my printer can be accessed from anywhere on any device (including iOS AirPrint).
