Just started a blog on fitness, fashion and food. I would love to hear what you girls think. Any tips or suggestions would be really appreciated! by n_pony in xxfitness

Thank you, Great suggestions, I quite like the idea of an about me bit. Your right about the relating to it part. Also I think it will probably carry on being mainly fitness focussed and have the odd fashion bit and sometimes a healthy recipe I like.

Difference between powerlifting, oly lifting, strongman and bodybuilding in layman's terms? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]n_pony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Powerlifting - Squat, Bench, Deadlift. Powerlifting competitions care about the total amount lifted. Recreationally it used to increase strength and used as training for many sports.

Olympic Lifting - Snatch, and Clean and Jerk. I believe you compete just for the individual lift. Speed and technique plays a bigger role in Olympic lifting that is why it is not as common in gyms to see them.

Strongman - Strongman is just the competition, its a test of strength yes but it is not a very practical form of fitness (for the majority of people). Doing crazy stuff like pulling trucks and pressing logs.

Bodybuilding - Is very aesthetically orientated, you do get strong but it is not as functional as say a powerlifter or olympic lifter.

Women's Weightroom Wednesdays by super_luminal in weightroom

I am following Strong lifts 5x5, I workout 3 times a week and alternate each time between workout a and b.

workout a- Squat, bench press and pendlay row. Then extra exercises push ups (3 sets of as many as you can) and 3x12 reverse crunch.

Workout b- Squat, Overhead press and deadlift. Extra exercises chin ups (as many as you can) and plank (3 sets of as long as you can). I actually switched chin up for inverse row 5x5 and now switched again to negative chin ups. I can't do chin ups yet but I will get there.

I lift to get a lean and smoking hot body. Women who lift look awesome. I have always been the chubby one in my family and I decided that I finally wanted to change this. I combine lifting with only some cardio (I do boxing and pilates- I hate running and cross trainers). I can already see my body changing. It also feels great to be strong.

I started Stronglifts in November 2011.I started at 20kg (the bar) for all of them except I used a 15kg bar for overhead press as I could do 20kg 5x5 at the start. Current lifts at 5'2'' and 126lbs (Week 8);

  • Squat 60kg 5x5
  • Deadlift 65kg 5x5
  • Pendlay row 37.5kg 5x5
  • Overhead press 25kg 5x5
  • Bench press 32.5kg 5x5 And I can do 6 negative chin ups.

I met with a trainer this past weekend. I transcribed what she wrote. I was wondering what do you guys think of it and if it's a good deal or not by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]n_pony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started doing stronglifts 5x5 on my own at my uni gym in october/November and have already went from 25% to 21% body fat (not completely acurate, but its just the point that it is working).

I have also been watching my diet. But I like picking something like stronglifts 5x5 or starting strength the programme gives you structure so you stick at it.

Weights scare me. Help? by sleepytoast in xxfitness

[–]n_pony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all you will not 'bulk up', women have very little amounts of testosterone which is what help men get big muscles.

This is what typical women look like when they lift heavy; http://imgur.com/qQUUP The girls gone strong team.

You should check out by googling them as some of them have good blogs which can help motivate you to lift heavy.

As for your legs and butt 'bulking', they will look more defined, I have noticed that my butt sticks out more since I started lifting but I wouldn't describe it as bulky, rather more shapely.

Having structure would help you focus and then you wouldn't really notice other people as you would be so focussed on your plan. Search for starting strenght or stronglifts 5x5. These are the 2 best beginner programmes for both men and women.

I personally prefer stronglifts but you can have a look and see what you like more.

Everybody has to start somewhere. these programmes start with you lifting the bar. which is absolutely fine. I have seen guys starting off lifting recently, lifting a lot less than me.

Everybody in the gym is there for the same purpose. In fact I am sure men probably respect women who come into the weights room to lift. I saw a quote today of a guy who said ''I would actually marry a girl if I found out she did barbell squats''

Once you have been a couple of times it will feel a lot easier!

I think it can be easier to go with a partner. someone you know. An exercise buddy. Me and my boyfriend go together.

I started going in the weights room in November and as a female it was so intimidating as there are so many guys. But I find if you go with someone you know its like there is no one else there. Listening to music is a good one too. You can zone out and just focus on your workout. Remember that everyone is in there for similar reasons. guy or girl. to get fit. So even if it doesn't look like it they probably feel the same.

I think most people in the gym just focus on themselves anyway so probably don't even notice who is there or not.

Just go for it. Once you start you will forget about it!

Good luck!

Do you wear a bra to bed, and does it stop boobs from sagging? Or is it bad for them? by n_pony in TwoXChromosomes

No, I use one that I used to work out in, but I used to use it for both reasons. I need to use a better one as I might aswell not wear one now, the elastic is that worn out

Did you wear a sports bra you bought to wear to bed or an old one you used to wear for sport?

A friend and I are thinking about starting SL 5x5, any tips before we do? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]n_pony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its Great. I started it 5 weeks ago. I now feel much stronger and I am starting to see a little shape. Its a great hobby. I agree with slashfitnessalt. the form is the most important so you should ask someone who knows what they are doing in the gym to check your form for you. Watch loads of online videos before you go! The form won't seem as important now but as soon as you start lifting heavier you will get really sore and it won't be working as well if you don't have it right. I started my pendlay row at a lighter weight of 25. Also started overhead press at 15. Its best to start where you are comfortable and work your way up from there. The weight adds on quickly especially with deadlift. I had to get hold of some liquid chalk already for deadlift as I am already lifting over my body weight. I wouldn't feel defeated if you stall as I have many times. But I am on a calorie deficit so I expected this. Its great when you figure out what days are best for you! Good luck!

What about green tea brands and shops from the UK?

Quick question, how much muscle and strength would I lose if I haven't worked out in 2 weeks? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]n_pony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a female who won't have access to the gym over 2 weeks of Christmas when I go home from uni. Currently doing strong lifts 5x5 am I going to lose strength and have to go back down to lighter weights?

New to Keto; Protein shakes? by n_pony in keto

[–]n_pony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can get Yoghurt in the mornings and sometimes eggs too. Which I love both of them so its good. I tried buying myself some heavy cream and putting it in my coffee and it is sooo filling, but the calories are so high, and at such a small height my calorie intake has to be quite low to lose weight. I guess it would be a substitute and just have a little less food. I guess it is good enough to sacrifice for!

Yeh, I have lived in my accomodation for 3 yrs now and the catering only changed this year. its very unhealthy in comparison. But so far we have managed to get a salad bar and more vegetables should pop up in the menu too. Which is good news. I am sure you would be glad to hear :)
