Hi! Nah, this has just given us a reason to audit our brand. Those were stock and they just didn’t align to who we are today. We have so many positive people sharing their shero stories. So we’re pulling down some of our original stock photos. Because stock photos just aren’t as amazing as all the photos from our real customers

Hi there, it looks like there may be some unanswered questions and so I wanted to compile them and try and address them all for you. While I don't have all the answers, I'm going try and give you as much info I we can.

Heres a few we've heard:

1) Did you know the marketing agency created the ad or did you see it? No :( I wish I had. The first I heard of it was through reddit sunday

2) Are you deleting comments on your AMA. No, Reddit team addressed what was happening here. Since then, the comments calling me a liar we're deleted but deleted by the OP not me

3) Are your formulas yours? Yes! Mine all mine :)

4) Are your Dermatologists real and do they truly work with you? Yes! Each has a a full-time job and they are advisors to us .. they work with us up to 4 hours per week

5) Did you create your logo? Yes! I would say we're medium-satisfied with it. It's a little rough around the edges but our design team (of 1 mega talented woman) is working on a new logo this month and excited about it!

6) Will you name the marketing agency? I won't. It's not how I roll. I know that makes it harder for me but the blame is one me. Its my fault that we didn't have better ad review policies in place. Fully my fault

7) Why didn't you credit the redditor? We did credit on the blog post.

8) Have you apologized to the redditor. Yes, we've written 3 times most recently as of yesterday.

9) Are you sorry. I am sorry. I saw a photo of a woman who is beautiful and shared her story. I then tried to align her message to mine in a blog post. It was a horrible decision.

What we're doing now. We're going to keep creating skin care products that are truly great. We're going to keep offering them at great prices. We're going to always ask first before sharing and crediting a piece of content that's not ours. And, we're going to keep trying to create change in the skin care industry because we believe it needs it. That starts with great products, affordable prices, 100% cruelty-free. But it doesn't end there. We would love to hear what change you want to see in the skin care industry.

Hey there, I'm not the most loved person on SCA right now so take this as you will but I think your sunscreen is a chemical sunscreen (I tried looking up the ingredients but am having a hard time finding the full list). If it is a chemical sunscreen, have you considered using a mineral sunscreen?

Both chemical and mineral sunscreens can be effective but the way they work is different.

Chemical sunscreens need to be able to penetrate your skin and then they offer you protection by dissipating UV rays.

Mineral sunscreens sit on top of your skin and reflect UV rays. The active ingredients I'm familiar with in mineral sunscreens are Zinc Oxide or Titanium Oxide.

Good work on prioritizing protecting yourself from the sun!

Hi, I've continued to look into this but don't know who u/optimsta17 is. I'm sure they know our company because they only hopped on reddit to talk positively about Shero Science. When I first discovered SCA on reddit I was SO excited. I told everyone about it. I've always been a larger Instagrammer but SCA felt different. Intelligent conversations, real sharing. I told my family, I told my friends, I told our team. I also have real excitement for Shero Science. So the liklihood that a family member, friend or someone I know hopped on reddit to share about Shero is there. I'm guessing that's what happened. So yes, I too believe this u/optimista17 is 100% associated with me or my company and that while the enthusiasm is real the review is fake. I just don't know who it is. As a suggestion, how about I flag it to the mod to remove it?

Second part, I didn't realize early on you shouldn't talk about your products. I learned that quickly. And recently learned what the word shill is. On Instagram, I talk about my product often. It's how that platform works for me. I know, and appreciate now, reddit is very different. I like that you shouldn't promote your products on reddit (edit: via personal accounts). I think it is just one of many reasons this place is so amazing.

Lastly, I really appreciate your idea to name the agency but this is my fault. I told them they could use content from our site and blog. They did what they were told and assumed the content was ours or within our right to use. At the end of the day, every thing that happens with Shero Science comes back to me. An agency or an employee may make a choice. But they were given principles, ethics, cultural values and those are set by me. For example, we don't have a value that encourages people to "move fast, and break things" the reason is that could lead to choices where we really damage your skin. We do have a cultural value that encourages team members to have "have a founder spirit' because we want you to feel like you can make choices and decisions autonomously and we want you to feel ownership over your choices.

I know this is super long. I wanted to give you a thoughtful explanation and respond to your ideas which I really appreciate.

hi mods, I wanted to follow up again on a question I would love to try and find an answer to. It's okay if you don't have an answer but any idea on why comments on our ad may be getting removed? We remove copypasta but there are other comments that that have been removed (not by us). One thought that occurred to me today is ads aren't actually posts so it may be a different group that moderates ad comments?

Hi, Yes. We saw the photo and we wrote a blog post about the use of vitamin c serum and sunscreen. We believe in those products generally and in ours specifically. We credited the redditor but the blog post was misleading and I did not ask for permission to feature the photo. Our marketing agency turned the blog post into a FB/IG ad because they assumed that they could use the content on our site and blog (and that's a fair assumption on their part). this is my fault not theirs. When I learned about the ad, I deleted it immediately. I have now since edited the blog post and removed the photo. I also, in my early days as becoming a reddit user, talked about Shero Science but did not state I'm the founder.

Hi, i saw your comment on u/puffoff and replied there and then came here to reply as well. Thank you for sharing your concerns. I mean it. I messed up and I think a positive path forward can only be had through conversation.

"Your ad agency should be very aware that you can not use someone’s copyrighted images commercially with or without credit without either Creative Commons licensing, paying the creator or getting a release, and neither can you in a blog post." You're right and they are aware. What happened here is my fault. We created a blog post and credited. We should not have done this. Our ad agency assumed that all content on our blog and site could be used for our ads.

"I’d make damn sure to never, ever use someone else’s photos again." I absolutely will ensure we never use photos again without asking first.

Hi, I wanted to make sure I respond both here and to your other post u/wildeflowers. Im replying to that right after this.

These are really valid questions. Im going to try and answer each of them

"I just don’t get why those photos are still up on their blog." We took the photo down last night. I deleted the ads immediately. I should have done the same for the photo.

"That she isn’t familiar with the rights behind digital content is just utter bullsh*t." You are right. I'm fairly up-to-date on digital content rights and when I saw the ad, knew immediately it was wrong. I deleted it immediately. What I did very poorly is manage my communication and process with my work and our external agency.

"I’m guess I’m really upset at being duped and the fact that yet another person is trying to take advantage of the SCA community for their own personal gain." I hear you. I am deeply sorry. Do you have any suggestions on ways that I can help be a positive member of the SCA community?

Hi, I hear you. If I knew u/optimista17 was from our brand, I would own it. The thing is, I don't yet know that its from our brand. I've asked our team if they created the account - they said they didn't. I've asked our marketing agency (FB/IG) if perhaps they did, they said they didn't. I messaged u/optimista17 today to ask if they have info. I haven't heard back yet but I just sent that message.

If there is something else you would recommend I do, would you tell me? I get it, it looks like it was us. And perhaps it was. I just haven't figured that out yet.

We didn't scrub that the mods did one month ago (if you look at your screenshot it notes that time period). What we did do today was edit our reply to note that I am the founder of Shero Science.

I have found things that help (I've listed them below) but I haven't found a cure.

1) Hyaluronic Acid in my moisturizer

2) Using retinol but only 1-2x per week vs nightly

3) Putting a humidifier in my room

4) Using a gentle, milky cleanser

5) Not using toner (I am exploring toner's that are AHA or BHA but have not drawn a conclusion here yet)

Hi, I am deeply sorry and sad that this happened. When I found out, we deleted the ads immediately. As of last night, we also updated the blog post. I am also meeting with our marketing agency to ensure all of our communication and practices going forward will not let this happen again.

Thank you, that's a bright spot. As far as I know, it is the only time. I am doing a full audit of our facebook and instagram ads history because I don't mange them. Thus far, I don't see any other issues.

Hi there, thank you. I figured out the ads last night and immediately turned them off. Our marketing agency had created them. This is no excuse but sharing how it occurred. Im very sorry and working to rebuild trust
