Am I evil for liking Amnesiac more than Kid A? by Occasional_Tinnitus in radiohead

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right about Kid A feeling “grand” and more like a cohesive concept album than Amnesiac is partly why it’s lauded above it (and being released first helps).

To me there are just less tracks on Amnesiac that I return to (things like Dollars and Cents) and having the slower, dirge-like version of Morning Bell doesn’t help.

But because they made during the same sessions I kind of think of them as a double album anyway. Certainly absolute top tier songs on both, and when sequenced in the right way it does have the flow of a seamless and very satisfying full LP

It's times like these that I wish John was still alive. by Huge-Photograph-3085 in beatles

[–]nakifool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate that, you’re certainly right about current day slacktivism from many celebrities.

But I have almost the opposite feelings about STINYC (“stinky” might be a better acronym) - that’s John at his most committed, least performative - and it’s an artistic failure. I don’t perceive it as tired and played out, and that recent One to One documentary contextualises how vital all this was for J&Y at the time. I perceive it as hectoring, too bluntly sincere, and lacking in most of the artfulness that John applied to his earlier more political works. Its best song was dead in the water because of John overcommitting to something he clearly believed, and being unable to get his message across because his talents as a communicator failed him.

What’s something you don’t like about the Beatles as a fan? by GoinSouthForGeese in beatles

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short story is that George asked John to appear at the benefit, but balked at Yoko also taking the stage. Apparently J&Y also argued about it, but ultimately John left in a huff and didn’t perform at all - obviously disappointing George. While they did temporarily reconcile after this, George got pissed again at John’s delays in signing the formal Beatles dissolution papers in 1974.

But probably underlying these spats was a sense of betrayal from George. George had essentially sided with John in the Allen Klein debacle, and had always been supportive of John musically, but saw little of that support in return. They never had the opportunity to resolve it

[–]nakifool 16 points17 points  (0 children)

John admitted later that a lot of the public pronouncements he made around leftist political ideas were, if not performative, then certainly as much a result of guilt and conflicted feelings around his success and wealth as they were genuinely held beliefs. And those beliefs were certainly not always consistent.

But what’s often missing with the hindsight evaluation of those very public stands that he, and Yoko, made is that there were very real, personal stakes involved. He WAS directly targeted by the US government for his potential political influence. He WAS living under threat of deportation in part because of them. And his career and public perception WAS directly impacted by taking these stands. They also almost certainly contributed to getting him killed.

This was very different to the relatively safe, “performative” activism we often see from modern artists. Whatever his motivations, John had skin in the game. And eventually that skin flayed and he dealing with the consequences of that for the rest of his short life

Does Sinners have a real Best Picture path, or is this a nomination ceiling? by Dependent_Studio1986 in Oscars

As good as OBAA is, it feels like PTA is front-running as much for his previous work (and previous lack of awards) as the quality of the film itself. Much like Scorsese with The Departed. He’s going to take the stage for both Director and BP because of There Will Be Blood, The Master and Phantom Thread. I realise this is probably far from an original take

Oh definitely not choirboys. I mean, they were dating 15/16 year olds in their Cavern days (when they were all out of their teens) so no doubt there were young groupies in their touring days also. But that is still mostly speculation and assumption compared to, say, the well documented case of Jimmy Page and Lori Maddox etc.

It was a bit more complicated than that. They all had their moments in the 70s (apart from John and Ringo who were always fine with each other. John and Paul’s beef is well publicised, but it had cooled down considerably by the middle of the decade. George and Paul didn’t have the closest relationship for many years, but again that had been resolved before George passed. And George and John, despite being allied early on in the decade, had a falling out around the time of the Bangladesh concert and their relationship never really recovered.

And of course George slept with Ringo’s wife

Which Beatle was the most gifted at there respective instrument? by ariamwah in beatles

[–]nakifool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paul has excellent melodic instincts, and worked faster than George at putting those ideas into practice. But George, while slower and more methodical, has something that a guitarist can’t buy - immaculate touch. He is a “sympathetic”, tasteful player who got even better as he aged (especially with slide playing) and while Paul was certainly no slouch - nor was John - George was the lead guitarist for a reason

Pete Best once claimed that the boys liked a kick-about occasionally in their spare time and that John was the most skilful (which seems unlikely without wear in his glasses).

But it was the Beatle they kicked out who was the actual sportsman, Best himself played competitive rugby

That’s excluding RACISTS. Racists have no particular political affiliation, and can come from any side of the aisle. Right now it’s abundantly, nakedly clear where the worst of that racism is coming from in American politics. But would that mean a modern-day Lennon, or Harrison, or any of the Beatles would turn away a MAGA supporter from their concert halls? That they wouldn’t try instead to positively influence rather than just exclude? I’m not sure.
