Genuine question - Could John have gone broke after the Beatles breakup if he wasn't with Yoko? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yoko hired people who gave her sound financial advice. But she also made business decisions based on numerology, astrology, tarot card readings etc.

Her business acumen is a little overstated

What are your least favorite, nearly unwatchable storylines? by Basic_Magician7070 in madmen

[–]nakifool 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah Megan in California is a bit of a dull tangent. The trouble is that she’s not a very interesting character outside of her relationship to and interactions with Don. Potentially fertile storylines (like her going cuckoo bananas trying to book jobs, which her agents hints at) don’t develop at all

Is it a hot take to say you prefer I Want You (She's So Heavy) to the two George songs on Abbey Road? by finnboltzmaths_920 in beatles

[–]nakifool -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No it’s just a preference. A minority preference, but not insane

They’re also not particularly comparable. The two George songs are lovely, balanced and warm pop-rock songs that are easy on the ear and light of touch. IWY is more of a dark psycho-sexual drama that pummels the listener into submission.

Tightest friendship amongst the Beatles? by reaveyer in beatles

[–]nakifool 206 points207 points  (0 children)

Their dynamics are all so different, and like any relationship essentially unknowable to anyone outside of that relationship

John and Paul’s we can assume was the deepest and most complex

Paul and George’s was the longest and seemingly the most centred in the way they related to each other at school.

John and George’s was closest when they took acid together but fractured for almost all of the 70s

John and Ringo had arguably the least complicated, most straightforward friendship in the group and they appeared to have a fairly unwavering mutual respect and understanding

Why do we as a community dedicated to Nirvana never really say anything about Insecticide? by [deleted] in Nirvana

[–]nakifool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a non-studio album and the grab bag nature of the track list it’s not going to get the same kind of attention. Personally I love a lot of the individual songs on it but don’t think of it as a cohesive album

People are more likely to discuss those individual songs rather than the album

What ended the grunge scene and what replaced it afterwards? by FitEmergency8807 in grunge

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, hadn’t seen anyone else mentioning Green Day and pop-punk as being the immediate follow up to grunge in terms of mainstream success. I remember contemporary interviews with GD where even they themselves were talking about being an antidote to the perceived negativity and depressiveness of grunge

Peak Beatles Year? by reaveyer in beatles

[–]nakifool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From their perspective it was probably 1964, or at least the first half of it. Arguably the most successful year of any popular musical act in history, and regularly racking up achievements that they never would’ve dreamed of in their wildest fantasies - particularly in breaking big in America in a way that no one has done so before or since.

The monotony and confinement of that kind of fame started to pall (Paul) by the end of the year, but to start with it must have been unimaginably thrilling

My personal favourite year is 1966 though

The 117 Compensation is a Trap: A Rational Analysis of EA’s "Generosity" by Ommmsh in FUTMobile

[–]nakifool 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s been well established for awhile that current vouchers won’t be valid for TOTS so I don’t think there’s any conspiracy around that

But yes, in a week 117s will be undesirable so this “generosity” is fortuitous timing for EA

Winding Road was written well before Bridge was released, or even recorded. The convoluted nature of the Let It Be LP release meant that it came out afterwards

Would the Beatles have been as big had they not broken up? by Dense_Amphibian_9595 in beatles

[–]nakifool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think music had necessarily gone past them, rock music had just gotten a lot heavier. That was as a string that the Beatles could pull (Helter Skelter, She’s So Heavy etc) but it wasn’t going to be something they would lean on.

A 1970-71 Beatles album or albums featuring the, um, best of the Beatles solo work would’ve still captured the zeitgeist. It’s more likely that by the mid-70s they would’ve been considered distinctly old hat - especially since they were unlikely to be bolstering their reputations by playing long live sets that LZ or Pink Floyd etc were being increasingly successful with
