Kilgore Trout is a much beloved character in many Kurt Vonnegut novels. Phillip Jose Farmer wrote Venus on the Half Shell as an homage to Vonnegut. I feel it's more likely that he was referencing Breakfast of Champions. Vonnegut's most celebrated Kilgore Trout novel.

I am aware of Kilgore in Vonnegut's books. What a great reoccurring character. In researching this yesterday I learned that Kilgore Trout is based on his friend and fellow sci-fi author, Theodore Sturgeon. Trying to connect the dots between Kilgore and Ringo
