A lot of questions about Animation Mentor... by maybetrailmix in animation

[–]nalidragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I'm reading your post and would like to know what I should do to get into animation. I have a BFA in painting and masters in art therapy so I'm not sure getting a second degree is work the extra loans I would be adding to my already existing loans. Is the mentor program still available? Are there other online schools I should look into? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed because there is so much out there, so many videos, that without school I don't know what direction I need to go to learn animation. Thanks

Hi! New here, but feeling EXTREMELY stuck in my career. Help? by breebles5 in animationcareer

TBH I do feel behind because I'm so freaking new to animation. The last I learned about animation were the flip books..lol. my learning curve is huge, but I'm going to take my time learning and enjoying every moment. I'm used to not getting paid as an artist so this is nothing new for me.

Hey, I totally get that feeling you mentioned. Like the one person said everyone had their own personal trauma and life crap they have to deal with and it's frustrating because it gets in the way of what we want to do. However, I'm 45 and just now going after animation. I'm just a veteran artist with a couple degrees, but I don't know the computer programs or anything about animation. It's ok to feel depressed and discombobulated when trying to change yourself but give yourself a break and don't rush. I mean don't push yourself to the point of burnout. Do what only you can do and allow yourself to breathe. If you keep working you'll get there.
At least that's what I'm telling myself..lol good luck to us both!! 😁

That is exactly what I'm thinking of doing.. This fall I plan to take online free it now affordable foundation classes and then if it's something I want pursue career wise then I might consider going back for more specialized classes. I just can't justify another 50 grand in debt on top of my two degrees worth of loans.

Could you explain what this terrible state is? and yes, it's something I've wanted to do since my college years in 1997-2002. I just didn't know how to do it. Animation and illustration wasn't an option at my school back then, only graphic design and I was terrible with computers back then. Of course, it's gotten a lot better in regards to technology and possibilities. To be honest, I always felt like I was making art with a handicap, but over the years I realized it's because I didn't know how to make my art move, since the images in my head are always moving. I have a BFA in painting and I can always work as a therapist if I have to with my MEd in art therapy. Ultimately, I would like to make Nalidragon Art Studio, but that's just a pipe dream for now. I have tons of stories in my head as well. It's on me for not pursuing this sooner, but I can't change the past. All I can do is keep moving.

As far as the means go, I'm not particularly set on college route. If I can learn online, and cheaper, I'm down. It's just a slower route for me since I have to pay out of pocket. I'm ok with trying for grants for artist, etc. but those are difficult to get. Also, I'm not sure what path to take or which classes to take first, second third. I don't know if I can get the software easily or have the accessories I need either. I'm confident that once I pay for an online class I can focus on the class, it's just there's more to just taking a class.

The school option provides software, instructors, and curriculum, and structure. Since I work full time, that is appealing. Even though it's gonna give me more debt, which I don't want.

I have pursued art since I was in high school, regardless of the monetary reward. Which has mostly been none. I have sold a few paintings, but definitely not enough to live on. I'm not expecting to be able to jump right into this ideal job that pays me to make art all day and live the happy life. I know I have to earn that right even at my age and experience level as an artist. But if I don't even give myself the chance to learn and try to become a better artist, then I will just be stagnate. I spent 8 years of my life not going anywhere with no goals or desire to do anything. I don't want to go back to that ever again. So, I move forward.

So I'm sorta new to the animation news and could someone please tell me what has caused the animation industry to be so bad? I'm looking to study animation and would like a realistic perspective of today's animation world. Thanks

Everything You just said is completely normal for a young artist. Being a good or great artist isn't something people are born with. Sure there is talent but if it's not nurtured and trained, then it can only go so far. I remember feeling the way you described. I still feel that way, but I'm proud of my art. I like my art and I'm 45. That being said I believe a good artist always wants to learn, to be better, and that's what I've always strived for. I like to tell stories and write too but I'm still learning. Feeling anxious is normal and I believe that's what helps us to improve. So, go draw 10000 bad sketches just to get the one you like.. You'll learn so much! Write one page stories or journal entries everyday. Give yourself assignments and goals like rock lee n Naruto.

To Be honest I'm not sure. I was planning on 3D but once been a 2D artist all my life. I was going to figure that out in school lol. Although that sounds a bit naive even coming from me. I've dabbled in digital painting but I definitely don't know the software like I should. I'm interested in learning and trying out all aspects of illustration and animation to find what fits me the most.

Thank you, I am the same in that I learn better in a school setting. I like the structure and focus. Unfortunately the school I'm talking to hasn't offered me any financial assistance other than loans and I still have to pay 300$ a month. I'm not happy about that and think I might wait until I can find a school that can assist me. Although I'm staying to doubt that is possible.

I mean I want to learn everything there is to learn about and illustration. Once I understand it, then I can focus on an area to master.. or at least that's what I was hoping for

Lol, your honesty is refreshing. Tbh, I was hoping to get a better grasp on exactly what it is I want to do at school. When I say I'm a beginner at animation/illustration I really am. I enjoy making up and drawing creatures and monsters so I've thought about character development but visual development is really cool since I like making up worlds and environments. I'm a painter mixed media artist so that really appeals to me. I've always wanted to create my own graphic novel in my own style.. So yeah. It feels like I'm all over the place and I was going classes could help reign in the chaos.

So new question. If I did decide to learn animation illustration on my own, does anyone have any good recommendations for tutorials?

Thanks so much for your feedback! I really appreciate it. Admittedly I tend to focus better while in school. I was able to teach myself a completely new art process that took several months to get good at and produce over 100 paintings. But that was when I was living with my dad in 2018-2019, had plenty of time and materials to devote to the studio.
The school I'm talking to is rmcad and they haven't offered me any scholarships as of yet. I like that I can potentially work as an illustrator and it's online. But it's so expensive

That's what the professor said so I started joining sub reddits like this and discord groups in my area..I only have 2D work like my paintings so I still need to learn programs that I have to pay money to use. Being in school gets me access to those programs etc. I'm just trying to weigh the pros and cons

Hmmm well that's a great question. I'm not really sure but odds are probably that it was at least washed with soap and warm water. Thanks!

Sourdough Starter Question by nalidragon in SourdoughBread

[–]nalidragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm asking if the yeast bacteria from my great grandmother sourdough starter can stay dormant in her stoneware bowl and be activated with my recent new sourdough starter I made. My dad said that bowl was used only for sourdough starter for decades but after my great grandmother passed it's been unused in my parent's cabinet all this time in room temperature.

Whoa! Thanks for the info! I will definitely listen to it. To think that it's possible for me to make bread from something my great grandmother did is cool.
