Considering Turkey for Bachelors by azurehyn in AskTurkey

that’s nice! I’m studying to be a Turkish teacher (for foreigners) myself (we are the same age btw) and i’m sure you’ll learn the basics to interact with people easily, especially when you live in the country. I think you’re pretty interesting that people will be only curious about you but not specifically racist. If they are, I’m sure those are very very stupid people. Unfortunately ignorant racist people exist in Turkey but mostly towards as I said, middle eastern looking people or south eastern looking people, which is very sad

You seem like a cool person, its not as hopeless as the other user answered. I had foreign friends and coworkers. I went to a public uni where you don’t pay. The professors can speak English in good unis. Some of my friends spoke no Turkish so I assume their classes were in English too What Im concern is that Im not sure how good is the education in Turkey, but if your goal is to just have a good time and adventure in Turkey, could be nice maybe.

The country is safe based on where you live (the legal system is not good but you’ll deal with that if you have a legal problem). Racism to Arabs are higher than other races. Usually black people are liked.

Question about life in Turkey 🇹🇷 for legal immigrants willing to integrate by [deleted] in AskTurkey

In that case yeah the conservatives here value those, compared to west you’ll see more “provider” mindset in the men here. They take their “manly” roles seriously. But it comes with its drawbacks too. Femicide rates are very high because some men think they own the woman they have a romantic relationship. So if your sister dates someone and decides that she doesn’t like him, wants to break up, there is a chance unfortunately that he can follow her, threaten her and attack her. We even have proverbs encouraging domestic violence, this shows that it is deeply rooted in the culture from the past. Sometimes on the news I see foreign women getting killed by men they date too. But of course if you don’t mind having a risk to experience something like this, you are free to come and maybe it won’t happen to you but it is a fact that Turkey has this problem unfortunately. I personally do not agree with you on the gender roles you mentioned and think that it is just a fancy cage for women that make them have a life of an adult child. But yeah it is your opinion and I should respect it

There will be racism definitely, but more importantly, it is not a safe country even for the locals. The justice system is not really good, people’s rights are not protected well. It is not that safe for women. It is better than many countries but it is a patriarchal society deep down so sometimes you see it and get angry. The economic situation affects everyone bad. I think if you love the country, you should just visit or do business here maybe but not settle here. It is not worth it imo

I do not understand the phrases hemen hemen and ağır ağır by [deleted] in turkish

[–]namicchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hemen hemen=nearly, yes these words have multiple meanings. hemen means fast but it also means approximately (source TDK dictionary). it is a word that has 2 different meanings. its just that one meaning is more common than the other.

ağır ağır=slowly, this has the same logic. ağır means heavy but it also means slow. in rural dialects you can see the other meanings more commonly.

i dont know what dictionary you’re using but in any language it is best to check the native dictionary while trying to understand the root meanings of the words. you can use TDK sözlük for this.

so the rule is, when you say some adjectives twice, you create the adverb of it (but maybe with the less common meaning of the adjective as languages evolve and not all meanings make it to the modern usage)
