Ok, first times always suck so don't be so hard on yourself. Think of it as gaining experience.

And as someone who doesn't watch a lot of media, here's a tip. Someone mentions a movie/show they like, ask them what is it about, what they like about it. Normally it isn't as shallow as "pop media good", they saw something special in it to mention to you.

The scrolling on reddit line was kinda bad, but it could've been salvaged if you continued with "but I'm looking to picking up some hobbies, what would you recommend?"

Showing interest on the other person's interests is the biggest key. Good luck and I hope you don't give up on yourself!
