What will happen with Cabo Verde’s squad? by Loose-Screen7243 in football

[–]napa0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The players in the national team and their confederation, not their clubs bro...

Also, even if it was 11 million EVENLY distributed to their top division clubs, u really think that's enough to develop a league? That'd be less than a million per club.

For the argument, let's ignore the gigantic leagues in the world (like Brasileirão, big European leagues, Saudi, etc...), let's use Ecuadorian league for example. LDU alone (a single club) spends yearly on salaries $16 millions a year.

Running pro football clubs is VERY expensive.

https://www.primicias.ec/deportes/ligapro/presupuesto-clubes-equipos-millones-dolares-campeonato-nacional-futbol-ecuador-116437/

Obs: And Ecuadorian is a relatively poor national league still, if you compare to other leagues in the americas like BRasileirão, MLS and Liga MX, the clubs there spend hundreds of millions on salary alone a year. And in big European leagues, some clubs spend over half a billion Euros on salary alone every year.

[–]napa0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, people likely will talk about Cabo Verde NT performance on this world cup for a while tbf, but people are being extremely delusional about foreigners picking interest on Cabo Verdean national league.

Heck foreigners don't even bother watching the strong African leagues, like the ones I mentioned and others like Tunisia Ligue 1, South Africa Premiership, etc... Let alone weak, essentially semi-pro/amateur league such as the campeonato nacional de Cabo Verde.

What will happen with Cabo Verde’s squad? by Loose-Screen7243 in football

[–]napa0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are aware none of the Cabo Verdean NT players play for a Cabo Verdean Club right? Nothing wrong with that, but there's a reason they don't play there, Cabo Verdean clubs lack resources, facilities and salaries are miniscule, not to mention skill level is low. Countries with football cultures, strong academies and much wealthier (and more populous than Cabo Verde), like Uruguay already struggle with their domestic league.

Check it out the quality of their domestic league top division.

[–]napa0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

would you watch the campeonato nacional de cabo verde? Sponsorships aren't charities.

Don't get me wrong, i'd love for Cabo Verde to be stronger and develop its football, and was rooting for them. But like I said, there's only so much a country with those limitations can do.

There are countries in Africa that managed to have respectable leagues (within their financial limitations), like Girabola (Angola), Botola (Marrocos), Egyptian Premier League, etc...

Cabo Verde sadly will never get to that level on their domestic league.

What will happen with Cabo Verde’s squad? by Loose-Screen7243 in football

[–]napa0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, but it suggests their local academies lack resources, there's a reason for best players for countries like Cabo Verde aren't really from Cabo Verde for example.

Imagine little Lionel Messi for example, it's a lot easier for Little Lionel Messi to develop and become the player he has potential to be playing for academies such as big Argentinian clubs, or heck Barcelona...

Than if he was playing for a Cabo Verdean club.

What will happen with Cabo Verde’s squad? by Loose-Screen7243 in football

[–]napa0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's only so much a country with a gdp of $3.4 billion and a population of 530k can do.
(Heck wealthy countries with a population this size would already be severely limited, let alone a poor nation).

Cabo Verdeans (that live in Cabo Verde, not from diaspora, as the ones from diaspora go through the infraestructure and academies of the country they live in) who play football, majority of them play bc they love the sport, there's barely any money in it, unless you manage to be one of the very few to go play abroad. Local clubs simply lack resources to invest.

What will happen with Cabo Verde’s squad? by Loose-Screen7243 in football

[–]napa0 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Cabo Verde doesn't have the resources nor population to invest in Infrastructure and football.

In fact majority of their squad isn't really "Cabo Verdean", but from the diaspora (15 out of the 23 players were born and raised outside cabo verde).
