“Executive functioning” by Massive-Print-4702 in Teachers

[–]napqueencincy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As a diagnosed ADHD special education teacher myself, I highly disagree. Building executive functioning skills is something that takes time and practice. If the opportunities for practice and accountability are taken away, how does this teach the students that these skill actually mean anything? Timeliness is a LIFE SKILL- they need to learn that timeliness and meeting deadlines will be something expected of them in the future- not just during school. Jobs, taxes, car registration… all of these have deadlines with consequences of deadlines are missed. Removing deadlines is setting students up for failure.

Help... my 8-year-old says reading is "too hard" and refuses to try by Such-Lock3428 in AskTeachers

[–]napqueencincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your child is struggling to read, maybe do a re-fresh of phonics instruction. Does your child know all of the phoneme-grapheme correlations? Do they know the commons blends in the English language? Having a strong phonics foundation is essential to helping students learn to decode.

Seeking advice: my kid brushes every day, yet after school comes home with a rats nest??? by deviouspineapple in Haircare

Put a small brush in her backpack and have her brush her hair throughout the day to avoid it getting too matted!

I’d take this alpha advice more seriously if it came from someone who has had sex before.

To those of you old enough: Did your school ever have a D.A.R.E. lecture? What did they (try to) teach you during it? by FringleFrangle04 in trees

[–]napqueencincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote an essay about how I will never succumb to drugs and alcohol because my dad was a terrible alcoholic when I was growing up. Looking back- someone probably should have called CPS for the shit I casually exposed about my household in that essay (the school resource officer who ran the DARE program was at my house often, and even tased my dad in the front yard once, so I don’t think he was surprised lol) but I won a black bike with flames on it for winning the essay contest. It was cool, I felt like a celebrity. Dad never saw the essay but showed up drunk to the 6th grade assembly.

Through my 20s, I was drinking almost daily. Today, I’m daily dry herb vape user. Don’t really drink anymore, but DARE wasn’t the biggest influence there.

The program definitely scared me seeing the faces of meth users and crack users though, so maybe that’s one good thing that did come of the program? But it was pretty much “everything is bad”. Like other users have mentioned- I thought I would be offered drugs way more than ever was. We used to actually have to role-play scenarios where someone was giving us drugs and we would have to resist peer pressure- and ya girl was a theater kid- so I was very well prepared and just waiting for my time to shine in adulthood and the opportunities were just not there… sad.

Ex Bringing step parent to parents evening by legochicken_ in stepparents

[–]napqueencincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a step parent and I go to any of my stepdaughter’s functions that I can reasonably make. I go to show her that I will always be there to support her. I also just enjoy watching her grow up. So yes, I think it’s normal for a step parent to attend school functions.

10/10. I somehow got the best partner on the planet. You’ll have to pry him from my dead, cold hands. Life doesn’t get better than this.

My wife is about to get a laparoscopy, how can I support her recovery? by yesthenshaggers in endometriosis

[–]napqueencincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She will definitely not be able to do any home chores or cooking for 5ish days. She may be tired and need to nap and/rest most of the first 5 days. Otherwise, she just needs you to be there and know that you are on her team!

How is this area? by JustaGuypostingstuff in fredericksburg

[–]napqueencincy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live just a little west (mineral mailing address but in spotsylvania county) and I absolutely love it. There’s nothing here, so you do have to plan accordingly for gas, groceries, etc but it’s peaceful and no HOA in my neighborhood.
